Zapata: I’ve shown I’m excellent

Milan’s Cristian Zapata says his performances at the World Cup have silenced his critics and shown he is an excellent player.

The defender played the full 90 minutes in four of Colombia’s five matches in Brazil, helping his country reach the quarter-finals.

Speaking to El Pais today, the 27-year-old revelled in what he describes as ‘revenge’ on his detractors and said he has earned his success through hard work.

Report: Azzurri to drop to 14th

Maradona: Messi award wrong

Diego Maradona says he does not agree with FIFA’s decision to award Lionel Messi the World Cup Golden Ball.

The Argentine talisman was presented with the prize, given to the best player in the tournament, following his country’s defeat to Germany in the final last night.

“I would give heaven and earth to Leo,” Maradona is quoted to have said by BBC Sport.

Gomez: This can be my year

Mario Gomez is hurt to have not been part of Germany’s World Cup winning squad but now wants to return to full form and fitness with Fiorentina.

The forward missed large periods of last season after twice suffering knee ligament damage, costing him a place in Brazil.

Rizzoli: Source of pride for Italy

Nicola Rizzoli has reflected on the ‘honour and pride’ felt in representing Italian football at the 2014 World Cup Final.
