Zola: 'Sarri high opinion of himself'

Gianfranco Zola reveals why his season at Chelsea with Maurizio Sarri was “exceptional, but difficult, as he has a very high opinion of his own ideas,” and analyses Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli sacking.

The Italy legend has made England his home after many years at Chelsea, as both player and assistant manager to Sarri.

“My season with Sarri was difficult, but exceptional in a professional sense,” Zola told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Zola: 'Anfield opportunity for Napoli'

Gianfranco Zola predicts Napoli could upset Liverpool in the Champions League and see this trip as “an opportunity” to turn things around.

It kicks off at Anfield on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT.

“It’s not a good moment for Napoli right now, but nights like this can spark a rebirth,” Zola told Il Mattino newspaper.

“Losing Lorenzo Insigne is a real blow, but the Azzurri already proved they know how to beat Liverpool. It’s true that the Reds have a very strong attack, but their defence is hardly a blockade.

Zola: 'Cagliari deserve top four'

Gianfranco Zola complimented his home-town club and gives Rolando Maran credit, as Cagliari “deserve their position” in the top four of Serie A.

Cagliari started the season with two losses, but now sit joint third with Lazio thanks to a 10-round unbeaten run, culminating in the 5-2 thrashing of Fiorentina.

The former Sardinian coach and player is impressed with their developments this season.

“The Rossoblu are doing very well and they deserve the spot they’ve got in the table right now,” Zola told Sky Sport Italia.

Zola: 'Sarri's Chelsea would've improved'

Gianfranco Zola believes Chelsea pulled the plug on Maurizio Sarri’s era too soon. “His best work comes from the second year onwards.”

The Italian tactician won the Europa League, reached the Carabao Cup Final and secured a third-place Premier League finish, but walked away for a new role at Juventus after just one season.

“I think the best of Maurizio’s work comes not in the first year, but more from the second year onwards,” former Chelsea assistant manager Zola told talkSPORT.

Zola thanks Chelsea for role

Gianfranco Zola has thanked Chelsea for employing him as Maurizio Sarri’s assistant and ‘helping my career’, even if news of his exit came ‘quite late’.

Zola returned to Chelsea last summer as Sarri’s No 2, and the pair rose above criticism to guide the Blues to third place in the Premier League, Champions League qualification and glory in the Europa League.

However, he was not retained by new boss and former teammate Frank Lampard.

Official: Zola leaves Chelsea

Gianfranco Zola has left Chelsea for the second time following Frank Lampard’s appointment as manager.

It was finally confirmed on Thursday that Lampard had returned to Chelsea, replacing Maurizio Sarri after his move to Juventus.

That has left Zola without a job after the Englishman decided to bring in his own backroom staff.

Voted the Blues’ greatest-ever player in 2003, the former Italy attacker was brought in as Sarri’s assistant last season.

Report: Zola to leave Chelsea

Gianfranco Zola is set to vacate his role as Chelsea assistant this summer, edging Maurizio Sarri closer to Juventus.

According to Sky Sports, Zola will leave Chelsea when his contract expires this summer and will not be offered an extension.

The former Napoli and Italy forward is a Blues legend and returned to Stamford Bridge last year as Sarri’s No 2.

However, it seems increasingly likely that the Coach will be appointed by Juve once Chelsea lock down a successor.

The Stamford Bridge side are in the Europa League semi-final this evening against Eintracht Frankfurt, while Arsenal take on Valencia.

There could be an all-English Europa League Final, but there already is that scenario in the Champions League, where Liverpool will face Tottenham Hotspur after dramatic comebacks.
