Official: Penarol appoint Lopez

Ex-Cagliari Coach Diego Lopez has been named as the new manager of Uruguayan club Penarol.

A statement from the side confirmed that he had been chosen “unanimously” by the Board of Directors.

Lopez will hold a presentation event at the Campeon del Siglo stadium on Saturday.

The 43-year-old is from Uruguay, but spent much of his playing and management career in Italy.

He played for Cagliari between 1998 and 2010, then retired and became a Coach in their youth academy.

Lopez: ‘It’s not over’

Cagliari Coach Diego Lopez insists his side are not safe yet after their vital 1-0 win at Fiorentina.

The Sardi began the day in the relegation zone but their victory at the Artemio Franchi, coupled with Crotone and SPAL dropping points, means they are now a point clear of third-bottom ahead of next week’s final round of matches.

Lopez: ‘We have to believe’

Cagliari Coach Diego Lopez says his side have to believe they can secure safety ahead of their match at Fiorentina.

The Sardi are in the relegation zone with just two matches of the season remaining, lying one point behind Udinese, Chievo and Crotone.

They have won just once in their last eight matches, a run of form that has seen the Uruguayan’s position come under threat.

Cagliari could be relegated this afternoon, but the Coach insists both players and fans must continue to believe they can beat the drop.

Report: Cagliari stick with Lopez

Cagliari have reportedly decided to stick with Coach Diego Lopez following a review of his position.

Lopez was thought to be facing the sack after a fourth straight defeat on Sunday, which left Cagliari just two points and two places clear of Serie A’s relegation zone.

However, Gianluca Di Marzio’s website claims the Sardinians have put their faith in the club legend to keep them up in their final three games of the season.

Lopez facing Cagliari sack?

Cagliari are reportedly weighing up whether to sack Diego Lopez, with the side in freefall.

According to Il Messaggero, Cagliari feel a change may give them the ‘shock’ they need, despite President Tommaso Giulini affirming the club would stick with Lopez ‘no matter what’.

The problem, however, lies with who would replace the Uruguayan as Giulini can only bring back sacked Coach Massimo Rastelli, promote former assistant and ex-Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie or fast-track youth chief Mario Beretta.
