Ventura: 'Italy were not positive'

Giampiero Ventura admits Italy were poor in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Macedonia, but blamed poor fitness levels.

Giorgio Chiellini’s tap-in just before half-time was the lone bright moment, wiped out by Aleksandar Trajkovski in the final stages in Turin.

“We lost some players and lost a certain thread that we had in the first half, in my view,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

El Shaarawy to miss Macedonia

Italy look set to be without Stephan El Shaarawy for tonight’s game with Macedonia, while Roberto Gagliardini had stitches.

The Azzurri have already lost Marco Verratti, Daniele De Rossi, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Claudio Marchisio to injury, while Daniele Rugani dislocated a finger.

Now Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that El Shaarawy is suffering with a thigh injury, which will force him to sit in the stands for tonight’s World Cup qualifier.

Azzurri need tactical shift

With a 4-2-4 formation costing Italy dearly against Spain, Giampiero Ventura should switch to a more balanced approach, writes Vilizar Yakimov.

Alessandro Del Piero, Francesco Totti, Filippo Inzaghi, Luca Toni, Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Iaquinta. That was the list of forwards with which Marcelo Lippi’s team lifted the World Cup in 2006. Yet despite having the comfort of choosing from so many quality attacking options, the tactician never actually fielded more than two strikers, as he stuck with his preferred 4-3-1-2 formation throughout the tournament.

Rugani suffers Italy injury

Daniele Rugani could reportedly miss Italy’s game with Macedonia with a dislocated finger.

The centre-back is in the Azzurri squad for the World Cup qualifying double-header, which also sees Giampiero Ventura’s side face Albania.

According to Premium Sport, however, the Juventus man is set to miss out on the game after dislocating his right index finger.

While it’s not a serious injury, the outlet believes Ventura could rest Rugani and have him in the stands for the Macedonia game.

Nestorovski sights on Italy

Palermo and Macedonia striker Ilija Nestorovski can’t wait to take on Italy in Friday’s World Cup qualifier. “Winning is what matters.”

It kicks off at the Stadio Grande Torino on Friday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“I don’t have good memories of the last game, as I scored a goal and hit the crossbar, but they didn’t help us get a result,” Nestorovski said of the 3-2 Azzurri victory in October 2016.

Italy: Verdi preferred to Candreva

Italy are expected to start Bologna winger Simone Verdi rather than Antonio Candreva in a new 3-4-3 formation against Macedonia.

The World Cup qualifier kicks off in Turin on Friday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Coach Giampiero Ventura appears to be moving away from the 4-2-4 formation he has used thus far and tested out a 3-4-3 in training both yesterday and today.

According to Mediaset Premium, Verdi will be given his full Italy debut on the right side of the trident rather than Inter winger Candreva.
