Darmian: ‘No negativity in Italy camp’

Matteo Darmian assures there’s no negativity in the Italy camp - “we’re calm, we’re working well”.

The Azzurri face Macedonia and Albania over the international break, but will almost certainly have to go through the play-offs to reach the World Cup in Russia.

“We’re lacking a number of important players, like [Daniele] De Rossi, [Marco] Verratti and [Andrea] Belotti,” Darmian noted in his Press conference today.

Stubborn Ventura

Azzurri Coach Giampiero Ventura must change his ways and be open to different players if he wants to truly succeed, writes George Rinaldi.

Following Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Spain that all but sets up the foregone conclusion that Italy would need to navigate a World Cup play-off, Giampiero Ventura was on the defensive when questioned on his tactics.

Supposedly, he was ‘testing things out’, though the now-infamous 4-2-4 style of play is becoming more of a recurring theme.

How are players in Serie A, where no team plays the 4-2-4, meant to simply succeed in such a formation?

Darmian: 'Emotional Torino return'

Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian will find it “emotional to be back at the Stadio Grande Torino” when Italy host Macedonia on Friday.

It’s a return for the former Torino wing-back, who wore the Granata jersey from 2012 to 2015.

“It’ll be emotional for me to be back at the Stadio Grande Torino, as they were certainly four very important years for my development,” Darmian told Italpress.

Ventura: ‘Missing World Cup catastrophic’

Giampiero Ventura admits “it would be a catastrophe” if Italy missed out on World Cup qualification.

The Azzurri will almost certainly have to go through the play-offs to reach Russia, with Spain three points ahead with a superior goal difference.

“I’d say it would be a catastrophe,” Ventura said when asked about missing out on qualification in today’s Press conference.

“Most recently out starters in midfield were [Daniele] De Rossi and [Marco] Verratti, and the first reserve was [Lorenzo] Pellegrini.

Italy squad for WC Qualifiers

Simone Verdi and Leonardo Spinazzola are added to the Italy squad against Macedonia and Albania, but no Simone Zaza.

The Azzurri host Macedonia in Turin on Friday October 6, then visit Tirana for the final World Cup qualifier on Monday October 9.

There had been reports Zaza would be recalled to the Nazionale following his hat-trick for Valencia, but he is left out again with new father Mario Balotelli of Nice.

Bologna winger Verdi gets his second call, while Stephan El Shaarawy’s recent good form with Roma also earns him a spot.

Italy to call in new players

Italy are expected to call new players ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier with Israel after losing Leonardo Bonucci and Leonardo Spinazzola.

The 3-0 defeat to Spain at the Bernabeu proved costly not just in terms of result, but also going forward.

Bonucci was booked in the first half and will therefore be suspended for the next match against Israel on Tuesday night.

‘Pelle left Italy no choice’

FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio discusses Graziano Pellè’s exclusion - “it was impossible to do otherwise”.

The striker was sent home from the Italy squad after refusing to shake CT Giampiero Ventura’s hand, as well as launching verbal abuse.

“The exclusion of Pellè, though it’s temporary and not definitive, was taken thoughtfully and painfully,” Tavecchio explained to Il Messaggero.

Struggles make Azzurri stronger

Italy scraped a narrow 3-2 victory in Macedonia, but Mina Rzouki explains why Giampiero Ventura deserves patience.

No country revels in negativity as much as Italy. A land where the finger is forever pointed at whomever is in charge, Italians love to criticise, to judge and to demand more regardless of the circumstances. Patience is a luxury no Italian can afford, least of all the Coach in charge of the Nazionale.
