Italy's attacking evolution

New Italy boss Giampiero Ventura is changing the Azzurri one step at a time, starting from the front, writes Chloe Beresford.

Italy Coach Giampiero Ventura has selected his squad ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Spain, which will be played at the Juventus Stadium on October 6. The Azzurri will go into the match in confident mood, after they defeated La Roja 2-0 just over three months ago in the Euro 2016 Round of 16.

Bonucci: ‘Balotelli is maturing’

Leonardo Bonucci is confident Mario Balotelli “is starting to think like an adult” and hopes he can return to the Italy squad.

The striker has been in sensation form since moving to Nice, but CT Giampiero Ventura felt he hadn’t shown enough to warrant an Azzurri return, and Balotelli agreed.

Romagnoli fit for Italy

Alessio Romagnoli is reportedly training with Italy, having shaken off an injury.

The young centre-back missed Milan’s win over Sassuolo at the weekend, leading to fears he would be forced out of the Azzurri squad.

However, Sky is reporting that Romagnoli engaged in the full workout at Coverciano this morning, and is fit for the Spain and Macedonia matches.

Ventura: ‘Verratti must be protected’

Italy CT Giampiero Ventura says Marco Verratti “must be protected” so he won’t face both Spain and Macedonia.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder missed Euro 2016 after hip surgery, and has been eased back into the side, making three Ligue 1 starts so far this season.

“He’ll be monitored,” Ventura explained in a Press conference today.

“After the Israel game he was out and he quickly recovered. In these cases you can pay a little bit, and he must be protected.

Italy: Sansone and Romagnoli in

Giampiero Ventura has called in Nicola Sansone, Domenico Criscito, Alessio Romagnoli and Matteo Darmian for Italy’s World Cup qualifiers with Spain and Macedonia.

The Azzurri won the opening fixture 3-1 away to Israel last month.

They will host Spain at the Juventus Stadium in Turin on Thursday October 6 and visit the National Arena Filip II in Skopje on Sunday October 9.

Players will begin arriving at the Coverciano training ground tomorrow evening and can begin work on Monday morning before travelling to Turin on Wednesday.

Report: Italy recall for Balotelli

OGC Nice star Mario Balotelli will be called up for Italy’s games against Spain and Macedonia, it’s reported.

The striker has rediscovered his form and confidence in Ligue 1, scoring four goals in three appearances for Nice.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Nice today received formal notification from the Italian Federation that Balotelli will be called up for international duty.

This is a formal step that has to be taken for players who are overseas and does not necessarily mean Balo will be in the final squad list next week.

Kuba scores in Poland win

Fiorentina winger Jakub Blaszczykowski scored as Poland beat Serbia 1-0, while Vlad Chiriches played as Romania saw off Lithuania.

The international friendlies continued this evening and several Serie A players were in action.

Blaszczykowski has struggled for playing time with the Viola this season, but scored a marvellous goal in Poland’s 1-0 victory over Adem Ljajic’s Serbia.

Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny also came on for the second half, while Torino captain Kamil Glik was in defence with Empoli’s Piotr Zielinski in midfield.

WC: Italy-Spain in Oct 2016

Italy begin their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign in Israel on September 5 2016, playing Spain in October 2016 and September 2017.

Only the group winners automatically go through to the tournament in Russia.

The runners-up then enter a play-off, to be played in November 2017.

The big fixtures for Azzurri fans are against fellow World Cup winners Spain.

They will host La Roja on October 6 2016, then visit Spain on September 7 2017.

Pandev returns to Napoli
