Super League: the clubs left off the guest list

The Super League seems to have collapsed, but Giancarlo Rinaldi argues, it taught us an important lesson about how the top European clubs are perceived.

It is the kind of conversation that usually gets heated over a few beers. Who are the biggest teams and how do you judge it? You can guarantee that no two people leaning against the bar in the wee small hours ever agree entirely about the stature of one side relative to another. The European Super League, though, was trying to end that debate once and for all by giving us no room for discussion - like the most brutal bouncer. If your name is not on the list, you are not getting in.

Video: What Ronaldo told Pepe during Juve-Porto

A video posted by the Champions League’s official Instagram accounts shows what Cristiano Ronaldo told Pepe during Juventus-Porto.

The Old Lady snatched a 3-2 win in Turin on March 9, but the result was not enough to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals as Porto had won the first leg 2-1 at the Stadio Do Dragao.

Sacchi: 'Usual Juventus problems'

Arrigo Sacchi identifies the problems that saw Juventus eliminated from the Champions League by Porto. ‘They don’t play as a team, lack intensity and even motivation.’

The Bianconeri crashed out of the Champions League at the Round of 16 yet again, but this time was even more damning than with Lyon last season, because Porto were down to 10 men for over an hour including extra time.

“I was surprised,” legendary coach Sacchi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
