Mid-table clubs aiming higher

The Scudetto contenders might grab all the headlines, but Serie A's mid-table sides are really strengthening this summer, explains Billy Wilkinson.

Whilst the top of the Serie A pack grows stronger with arrivals like Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus and Inter fixing the holes in their team, it appears Serie A’s middle pack are just as busy making important moves.

As always, those who are not blessed with rich owners or a lucrative financial model are forced to find different ways to be successful. Fiorentina’s method is buying promising talent and then developing them into world beaters and their strategy is clearly on show this summer.

Perica ready for Frosinone

Udinese striker Stipe Perica is said to be on his way towards newly-promoted Frosinone.

The tall centre-forward turned 23 last week and had been tipped for great things at Chelsea.

He went on loan to NAC Breda and Udinese before completing a €4.5m transfer to Udine in 2016.

The Croatian has struggled for playing time and Sky Sport Italia claim this prompted Perica to accept another loan at Frosinone.

The Canarini have just earned promotion via the play-offs and will be back in Serie A this season.

The 24-year-old scored four goals and provided seven assists last season, helping the Zebrette to avoid relegation.

According to Sky Italia, he was told that if big offers arrived this summer he’d be allowed to leave the club, and a proposal duly came from the Viola.

Despite the agreement though, Udinese turned the bid down and De Paul is said to be furious.
