Wk16: Stalemate synchronicity

It was a weekend of dire draws, but some sides tried harder than others to break that deadlock, writes Susy Campanale.

This was an historic weekend, as Juventus, Napoli, Roma and Inter had not all played goalless draws in the same matchday since Week 17 of the 1965-66 campaign. I’d love to say it was not for want of trying, but that wouldn’t be entirely true. Some tried considerably harder than others.

Oddo critical despite win

Massimo Oddo was critical of his Udinese team despite this afternoon’s 2-0 win over Benevento.

Goals by Antonin Barak and Kevin Lasagna gave the Bianconeri their second successive victory and third in five matches.

However, their Coach admits there are is still much room for improvement in his side’s play.

“The defensive side of the game should be our starting point and we are glad we didn’t concede,” the former Pescara boss began.

De Zerbi looks to transfer window

Roberto De Zerbi still believes Benevento can avoid relegation and is targeting January signings to help him.

Le Streghe were handed yet another Serie A defeat this afternoon, meaning they have just a solitary point after 16 games of the season.

Despite already being 10 points shy of safety, the former Palermo boss still thinks his side can escape the drop if they sign experienced players next month.

“We conceded goals immediately and that didn’t help us,” De Zerbi said of today’s 2-0 defeat at Udinese.

Udinese see off Benevento

Udinese’s rebirth under Massimo Oddo continues with a 2-0 victory over Benevento, as Antonin Barak and Kevin Lasagna proved decisive.

The Friulani got the job done in the first half, as Barak’s shot took a deflection off Gaetano Letizia to wrong-foot Alberto Brignoli.

Lasagna then placed a precise angled drive into the far bottom corner on a Barak assist.

Benevento falter again after earning their first ever Serie A point last week.

Iachini: ‘Search for our identity’

Beppe Iachini says Sassuolo are still searching for their identity ahead of the match with Crotone.

They were beaten 3-0 by Fiorentina last weekend, with the last seven days being the first full week Iachini has had to work with his new players.

“Both for the match against Bariand the one against Fiorentina, we had very little time to prepare,” the tactician said.

Oddo: ‘We have to be perfect’

Massimo Oddo insists Udinese will ‘have to be perfect’ to beat Benevento, who have just one point from 15 matches.

After 14 successive defeats to open the Serie A campaign, Le Streghe finally got off the mark in last week’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Milan– with goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli scoring the equaliser deep into injury time.

“Aside from the draw with Milan, we will face a very good team who play good football,” Oddo said of the League’s bottom team.

According to reports in Turkey, Bajic could be heading straight back to his old league, but this time for Trabzonspor.

De Zerbi: De Ceglie a gamble, but…

Roberto De Zerbi admits Benevento are taking a gamble with free agent Paolo De Ceglie but hopes his “superior quality” will help the club.

De Ceglie is currently on trial at Benevento with a view to joining the Serie A strugglers, although the former Juventus left-back has not played an official game since a four-minute cameo for Olympique Marseille in March 2016.

“Free transfers are to be taken with a pinch of salt, so as to try to understand the state they’re in,” the Coach said at a Press conference.
