Video: Catania coach banned for tackling opponent

Catania coach Giuseppe Raffaele has been given a four-match ban in Serie C for tackling an opposition player during a counter-attack.

The incident occurred deep into stoppages when his team was beating Vibonese 2-1.

When the Vibonese player won back the ball at the touchline, Raffaele took a step forward and pinched it off him just as he was going on the counter-attack.

The referee sent Raffaele off and he has now been given a four-match ban.

Palermo: ‘Six new Covid cases’

Palermo have announced they only have 13 players available for this evening’s derby against Catania as they registered six new cases of Covid-19.

“The latest round of swab tests underwent this morning showed a total of seven positive players,” Palermo said in an official statement.

The club had already registered five cases in the last few weeks.

Serie C: Six new cases of COVID at Palermo

The derby between Palermo and Catania could be at risk, as ANSA reports six new cases of coronavirus at the Rosanero.

The news agency reports the pre-match swabs on the eve of tonight’s match in Serie C, scheduled at 20.00 UK time, has revealed six players positive for COVID-19 and two others are being studied further.

Among the 18 players called up by coach Roberto Boscaglia, six players tested positive for coronavirus, totally asymptomatic.

The club waits for the outcome of the control swabs carried out this morning, as per the FIGC protocol.

Official: Catania part ways with Lucarelli

Catania have officially announced the departure of Cristiano Lucarelli, who has been linked with Watford and Ternana.

Catania ended the season sixth in Serie C and won a place in the promotion play-offs, but the 1-1 draw with Ternana was Lucarelli’s last in charge of the Rossazzurri.

The Serie C side, who are on the verge of bankruptcy, officially announced his departure today, ending the contractual relationship with the coach, the assistant Richard Vanigli and technical coach Alessandro Conticchio.

Lucarelli: Watford or Ternana?

There are mixed reports over Cristiano Lucarelli’s next move, as while in England they tip him to become Watford director of football, he’s also linked with the Ternana coaching job.

The former Livorno, Torino and Parma striker is currently the coach of Serie C side Catania, who are on the verge of bankruptcy.

It means he’ll become a free agent and can choose his next destination.

Serie B: Trapani docked a point

Trapani in Serie B, along with Serie C sides Casertana, Catania and Siena have been docked points for financial irregularities.

The FIGC announced the decision this evening, to be applied to the 2019-20 season tables.

Trapani are docked one point in Serie B, while Siena have the same fate in Serie C.

Casertana and Catania had more serious irregularities and see two points removed from their Serie C standings.

They all failed to pay wages and/or salaries on time for players and staff.

Bergessio regrets leaving Italy

Former Catania forward Gonzalo Bergessio has claimed his ‘biggest mistake’ was to leave Italy and revealed he was close to joining Lazio in 2015.

The Argentine 35-year-old currently captains Club Nacional in Uruguay and looks back at his career, arguing that his peak came at Catania in Serie A.

“My best period was certainly in Italy, at Catania,” the centre-forward told Olé. “In those years I was really at an excellent level. People there loved me very much.

Trapani, Catania and Siena miss wage payments

Serie B side Trapani, Serie C outfits Siena and Catania have been deferred to the Disciplinary Commission and could be docked points for not paying wages on time.

The FIGC prosecutor received notice from the COVISOC that the three clubs did not pay their employees the February 2020 salary by the March 16 deadline.

They could all now be fined or even docked points, particularly as Catania and Siena did not pay the January 2020 wages either.

Papu: 'Simeone wanted me at Atleti'

Atalanta captain Alejandro Gomez claims Diego Simeone wanted to bring him to Atletico Madrid after their time together at Catania.

The Argentine forward helped Cholo to 13th in Serie A in 2010-11, but the former Lazio and Inter midfielder moved back to Argentina to coach Racing Club the following season.

Simeone returned to Europe when his former club Atletico Madrid came asking in 2011-12 and Papu, who had stayed at Catania, was getting restless and wanted to play in the Champions League.
