Champions League XI nominees

Cristiano Ronaldo, Matthijs de Ligt, Kalidou Koulibaly, Fabian Ruiz and Italy international Jorginho are all nominated for the UEFA Champions League Team of the Year.

It is the 16th consecutive season in which CR7 has been nominated.

He is joined on the list of nominees by his new teammate Mattijs de Ligt, who arrived at the Allianz Stadium after a phenomenal run to the semi-finals in the last Champions League campaign.

Napoli, who have never had a player in the all-star XI, have got two players among the list of 50 nominees.

How Jorginho won Chelsea over

Jorginho’s football was too much of a change for Chelsea fans, but Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall saw Calcio’s Puccini win over the Wagnerian Premier League.

Not everybody who likes Puccini also appreciates Wagner. Either way, the music still takes form. In Naples, the masses would tell you tales of the beautiful, rhythmic and delicate touches that Jorginho used to distribute. Since he has gone, ask any Neapolitan and they will poetically remember a master craftsman, a conductor to an orchestra they once adored.

Azzurri built around quality

Italy finally have an identity built around a group of quality midfielders, writes Emmet Gates, but concerns remain in defence.

Roberto Mancini made history. Following Italy’s fluid 3-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Bilino Polje stadium in Zenica. This was Mancini’s 10th consecutive win with the Azzurri, surpassing the legendary Vittorio Pozzo’s record in the late 1930s. It was also a sixth consecutive away win, another first.

Tonali: 'I'm more of a Jorginho'

Sandro Tonali admits he is “more of a Jorginho” at Brescia, but can adjust his style to play alongside the Chelsea man for Italy.

The 19-year-old was given his first start in the Azzurri jersey during a 3-0 Euro 2020 qualifying victory away to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“I am happy with how we all played. I’m glad that I got through the emotion of my first Italy start and am enjoying all of it,” the Brescia youngster told Rai Sport.

Jorginho: 'Chelsea promise to myself'

Italy international Jorginho described his determination to prove himself at Chelsea, especially without Maurizio Sarri. “I promised myself I wouldn’t lose this challenge.”

The midfielder was brought to Stamford Bridge from Napoli by Maurizio Sarri, but has seemingly found a whole new lease of life under Frank Lampard.

“It’s all going very well, but there’s no fluke about it, as I wanted to make my mark in the most competitive league in the world,” Jorginho told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

Jorginho agent won't rule out Serie A

Jorginho’s agent commented on “a positive year” for the Chelsea and Italy midfielder, but won’t rule out a return to Serie A. “Anything is possible.”

Practically perfect Italy progress

Italy are a team transformed from World Cup failures to Euro 2020 perfect records, but Giancarlo Rinaldi awaits further developments.

They might have disguised themselves in green, but it did not leave us feeling blue. From one of the lowest points in the history of the Italian national team, we really could not have asked for more.

A 100% Euro 2020 qualification record - matched only by Belgium - and a place secured with three games to spare would have seemed almost unimaginable two years ago. Roberto Mancini has delivered on his promises with the same style he used to produce with the Sampdoria Number 10 on his back.

Jorginho: 'Italy wanted this so much'

Jorginho joked about his penalty record, but confessed Italy “wanted this so much, especially considering the horrible times we went through.”

Italy's midfield renaissance

Italy can rely on an array of Azzurri alternatives in midfield and build a team around these talents, explains Kaustubh Pandey.

The future of the Nazionale will be built around the extraordinary new crop of emerging midfield talent, as young faces combine with the not exactly old guard to give Roberto Mancini an array of options.

It isn’t reminiscent of the old Italian midfield, which had Andrea Pirlo, Rino Gattuso and Claudio Marchisio in it, but it is now ready to carve out a reputation of its own. There also seems to be a balance and quality of depth to it.
