Lorenzo Insigne explained his tactical role coming off the bench for Italy against the Republic of Ireland. “We are optimistic.”

The Azzurri suffered their first defeat of Euro 2016, falling 1-0 to a late Robbie Brady header, but were already sure of top spot in Group E.

Spanish Press deny Barca-Insigne

Spanish reports deny claims by Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne's agent that he is being targeted by Barcelona.

The 25-year-old, currently representing Italy at Euro 2016, had been touted for a move to the Catalan club by some elements in the Neapolitan media.

The reports followed after statements by the player's agent, who said a salary increase was expected if the interest of foreign clubs such as Barcelona were to be kept at bay.

Versatility key against Sweden

Italy vs Sweden has all the hallmarks a low-scoring draw, argues Andrea Tallarita, but Coach Antonio Conte still has ways to prevent that.

There appears to be a healthy cautiousness amid fans ahead of Italy's second Euro 2016 game, which will be played against Sweden. Some of it is a near-superstitious worry that success rarely repeats itself. Others are concerned that the team could already be showing signs of tiredness. Arrigo Sacchi stated in yesterday's Gazzetta dello Sport editorial that Italy should beware of “psycho-physical tiredness, and the combination of stress and exceptional exertion”.

Italy's problem with passing

The Azzurri's major weakness is passing, but Andrea Tallarita believes it's not without solution.

Italy's assertive 2-0 victory over group favourites Belgium belies the uncomfortable truth that the Azzurri are not very good at the basic skill of passing. The number of times that a promising play petered out because the pass simply couldn't find its man was frustrating, and the same holds true for crosses.

Agent: ‘Insigne has options…’

A representative for Lorenzo Insigne warns Napoli that the forward is “not lacking” other options.

The Italian international had a fine season for the Partenopei, but has yet to be offered an improved contract.

“Insigne deserves a top club, and Napoli are one,” Franco Della Monica, one of Insigne's entourage, said on Radio Crc.

“[President Aurelio] De Laurentiis will reward Lorenzo like he deserves, if not then we’re not lacking other clubs. What counts is that Insigne and Napoli want to stay together.

Dear Lorenzo Insigne

An open letter to Lorenzo Insigne, penned by Andrea Tallarita, in which we ask the player to take responsibility as Italy's last fantasista.

Dear Lorenzo Insigne, do you remember what the customary expression is for a young, promising player who loses his way? They say that he is 'burned'. Suppose that an 18-year-old scores a couple of wonder goals: suddenly everyone – the fans, the Press, the directors – starts piling praise and pressure on him, calls him 'the new Zinedine Zidane' or 'the new Marco Van Basten', and as often as not the kid collapses. Either he never reaches his full potential, or he returns to his true level, which turns out to be mediocre.

Insigne expects new Napoli deal

Lorenzo Insigne’s agent expects a Napoli contract renewal in August, but “it looks as if he’ll be on the bench” for Italy at Euro 2016.

The home-grown talent is the only native Neapolitan in the first team and as such earned his status as fan favourite.

“Napoli are working well on the market and the names I’m hearing are the right ones to reinforce the squad,” agent Franco Della Monica told Radio Marte.
