World Cup: England end shoot-out curse

Yerry Mina equalised for Colombia deep into stoppages, but England ended their penalty shoot-out hoodoo to set up a quarter-final against Sweden.

The Three Lions had celebrated going through second in the group behind Belgium, as it meant avoiding the likes of Brazil and France in this side of the draw. Los Cafeteros couldn’t even count on James Rodriguez for a spot on the bench after his injury, but Juventus winger Juan Cuadrado and ex-Pescara talent Juan Ferando Quintero started.

Quintero: From Pescara to Madrid?

Former Pescara midfielder Juan Quintero is reportedly a target for European champions Real Madrid.

Tuttomercatoweb cites reports in the Spanish Press, which claim Madrid could go for Quintero if Mateo Kovacic leaves.

However, a deal could be complicated by whether River Plate redeem their option to buy 80 percent of the Colombian’s ownership for €3.7m before Saturday’s deadline.

From that, Porto would be entitled to 20 percent of any sell-on fee, as per the terms of their loan agreement with River for the 25-year-old.

World Cup: Januzaj defeats England

Adnan Januzaj’s stunner means Belgium top the group and will face Japan in the Round of 16, while England take on Colombia.

This was an extremely strange situation to be in, because both teams were qualified and not particularly eager to top the group, because they would then face Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, Portugal, France and Argentina on their path to the Final. Runners-up, on the other hand, faced the prospect of Colombia, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Russia, Croatia and Denmark.

Japan almost paid the price for resting players against Poland and only went through because Senegal had more yellow cards.

They finished level on points with the Africans and with the same goal difference, so it all came down to the Fair Play rules – Senegal had two more bookings, both earned by Torino striker M’Baye Niang.
