World Cup: Honda stalls Senegal

It remains very tight in Group H, as Japan fought back twice to hold Senegal, including a late equaliser from ex-Milan star Keisuke Honda.

This was a surprising top of the table showdown, as Japan beat 10-man Colombia and Senegal swept Poland aside in their opener. There were several Serie A faces on show, from Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and Torino striker Mbaye Niang to Inter full-back Yuto Nagatomo.

Senegal took the lead in bizarre fashion, as Eiji Kawashima punched a Youssouf Sabaly shot on to the knee of Sadio Mane and it ricocheted in from six yards.

WC Player Profile: Wojciech Szczesny

The goalkeeper pushed his way to the starting XI at Juventus and Poland after going from strength to strength, writes Anthony Barbagallo.

Wojciech Szczesny had fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal, but two years on loan at Roma allowed him to rediscover his confidence.

A surprise transfer to Juve followed and he has now replaced Gianluigi Buffon in the first choice gloves - at least for now, as Mattia Perin is eager to take the same path.

Asprilla tips Falcao for Milan

Radamel Falcao “would do great things” if he were to join Milan, said fellow Colombian striker Faustino Asprilla.

There have been multiple reports of interest in the Monaco centre-forward, who could arrive in an exchange with Andre Silva.

“Falcao is a hitman. Everyone he played, he scored goals,” Asprilla told Tuttomercatoweb.

“If he were to join Milan, he would do great things there too. He’s a great player and an icon of Colombian football.”

Guarin: 'Pay cut for Inter return'

Fredy Guarin “would be prepared to cut his salary for a return to Inter” from Shanghai Shenhua, said his agent.

The Colombia international midfielder was sold to the Chinese Super League club for €13m in January 2016.

“He renewed his contract for another two years, but not everything necessarily goes the way you expect. We’ll see what Inter will say and do,” agent Marcelo Ferreyra told Passione Inter.

WC Player Profile: Juan Cuadrado

Juan Cuadrado has proved he is dependable in a variety of roles down the right flank for club and country, writes Daryl Hammond.

The Colombia international might've been overshadowed by James Rodriguez at the 2014 World Cup, but still provided four assists and is increasingly versatile.

At Juventus he played in any position down the right, from full-back to attacking prong of a trident.

Now 30 and recovering from an injury that took longer to deal with than expected, Cuadrado can shine in Russia this summer.

Sanchez off as Japan beat Colombia

Fiorentina midfielder Carlos Sanchez picked up the second-fastest red card in World Cup history during Colombia’s 2-1 defeat to Japan on Tuesday.

Sanchez took just four minutes to be given his marching orders as he deliberately stopped a shot going in with his arm, allowing Shinji Kagawa to score from the penalty spot.

Only Jose Alberto Batista was sent off at a World Cup quicker than the former Aston Villa man, the Uruguayan seeing red just 54 seconds into a World Cup match against Scotland at Mexico 1986.

WC Player Profile: Kalidou Koulibaly

A stalwart in defence for Napoli, Kalidou Koulibaly will be expected to be equally as reliable for Senegal in Russia, writes Michelle Osei Bonsu.

The centre-back has been a rock for the Partenopei in Serie A this season and is a leader for his national team too.

Senegal are in a very balanced group with Poland - who they face this evening - Colombia and Japan.

That means K2 will be marking the likes of Robert Lewandowski, James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao and his club teammate Arkadiusz Milik.

Zapata heading to Boca

Milan defender Cristian Zapata is on the verge of a transfer to Boca Juniors, claim reports in Argentina.

Newspaper Ole maintain the two clubs have already reached an agreement, but Boca must now work out personal terms with Zapata.

The Colombia international centre-back turns 32 in September and is under contract until June 2019.

He rarely gets much playing time, making 20 competitive appearances this season, only 12 of them in Serie A.

Milan should stick with Silva

A swap deal between Andre Silva and Radamel Falcao is suggested with Monaco, but Milan should resist, argues Matthew Santangelo.

Since Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sold in the summer of 2012 to Paris Saint-Germain, Milan have failed miserably to replace him with a prolific No 9 capable of scoring goals by the handful. From Mario Balotelli to converted winger Jeremy Menez, Carlos Bacca and Nikola Kalinic, it’s quite clear the Rossoneri desperately lack the presence up front their domestic competition luxuriate in.

Colombia: Zapata in, Zapata out!

Milan defender Cristian Zapata and Juventus’ Juan Cuadrado are in Colombia’s World Cup squad, but Sampdoria namesake Duvan misses out.

Cristian played just 12 times for Milan in Serie A last season, while Duvan scored 11 goals for Samp, yet it is the former who makes the cut.

Cuadrado is also called up, as expected, after helping Juventus to another domestic double, as are Fiorentina’s Carlos Sanchez and Milan’s Carlos Bacca, who enjoyed productive loan spells with Espanyol and Villarreal.
