Cragnotti: '20 years on from Lazio Scudetto'

It is 20 years to the day since Lazio won the Scudetto, as then-President Sergio Cragnotti looks back over an incredible campaign and reveals Paul Gascoigne was ‘a marketing more than football move.’

Current coach Simone Inzaghi was in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s squad when they took the Serie A title on May 14, 2000, their first in 26 years.

“That was the greatest emotion one could feel and totally unexpected, because nobody thought before that game that we’d win the Scudetto,” Cragnotti told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper.

Only in Serie A: Rossi batters Bucchi

No goalkeeper likes to concede a goal, but few realised when Sebastiano Rossi clotheslined Cristian Bucchi, it would be a turning point for the Scudetto.

Words: Martin Mork

With Milan 2-0 up against Perugia in January 1999, Hidetoshi Nakata pulled the Grifoni back in the game with a composed finish from the penalty spot, slotting the ball past Rossoneri goalkeeper Sebastiano Rossi.

Only in Serie A: Presidential Sumo bout

Perugia President Luciano Gaucci was invited by Bari patron Vincenzo Matarrese to enter the ring for a heavyweight championship of controversial chiefs. Martin Mork recalls an epic belly brawl.

Luciano Gaucci waved his finger in the referee’s face and claimed he had ‘done nothing’ in a decisive moment during the first half, that ‘hospitalised’ Renato Olive ‘with a cheekbone fracture’ when Vincenzo Matarrese came off the away side’s bus to instigate some incredible scenes. The Bari patron invited the famous Grifone chief to write another headline: “Gaucci! We’re from Serie A!”

Ultimately, the Rossoneri claimed the title by 11 points, with Roma and Juventus fighting it out for second. Inter rounded off the top four while the teams doomed to Serie B – Perugia, Modena, Empoli and Ancona – were eventually settled by a relegation play-off.

Only in Serie A: When Gaucci 'sacked' Ahn

Livio Caferoglu remembers when Perugia publicly disowned forward Ahn Jung-hwan for helping South Korea knock Italy out of the 2002 World Cup.

It’s easy to go straight to Maurizio Zamparini and Massimo Cellino when discussing crazy Serie A Presidents, but laying the foundations for them was the even more eccentric Luciano Gaucci.

Gaucci did it all in over 10 years as owner at Perugia, from signing the son of Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi to trying to assign a women’s player to the first team. However, his most infamous act came in June 2002 involving one of his own – Ahn Jung-hwan.

Hubner: 'I'd sneak cigarettes and grappa'

Brescia and Piacenza legend Dario Hubner was known just as much for his off the field lifestyle as his Serie A goals. “My father would sneak cigarettes and home-made grappa into the training ground. I gave some to Al-Saadi Gaddafi once…”

The striker turns 53 later this month and found top flight success late in his career, above all when joint Capocannoniere with David Trezeguet on 24 goals in 2001-02.

“I’d smoke at least 20-25 Marlboro per day and I did it openly,” ‘The Bison’ told Quotidiano.net.

Football Italia calcio quiz - Serie A 2001-02

Think you know your Capocannoniere from your catenaccio? Test your Serie A knowledge with Football Italia’s calcio quiz, 2001-02 edition!

Another bout of last round drama was in store for the 2001-02 season as three teams went into the final day with a chance of claiming the Scudetto. Juventus eventually came out on top, beating champions Roma and Inter to the trophy, the Old Lady’s first title since 1997-98.

But Chievo were arguably the story of the season, as the Flying Donkeys took Serie A by storm. They led the table for six rounds before falling away – but still claimed a creditable fifth place in their debut Serie A campaign.
