Competitive start to the Serie A season

Serie A is the second most competitive of Europe’s top five leagues after seven games of the season.

Juventus have taken the Scudetto in each of the past six years, but it appears the Bianconeri will face more of a challenge this season.

Napoli went top of the League yesterday when the Old Lady dropped two points in Bergamo, and only the Premier League can beat Serie A for competitiveness at the top of the table so far.

Juric coy on sack reports

Genoa boss Ivan Juric insists he is not afraid of the sack ahead of Saturday’s clash with Bologna. “Only the results are missing.”

Genoa have lost four of their opening six games in Serie A this season, but Juric felt his side improved enough during their 1-0 defeat at Inter last weekend to suggest they were ready to deliver.

“Bologna are a good team, but I’m just focused on my own,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

Zapata ‘won’t celebrate’ at Udinese, but...

Sampdoria’s Duvan Zapata has vowed not to celebrate if he scores against Udinese but is disappointed his former club did not do more to keep him.

Zapata scored 27 goals in two seasons at Udinese, but the Zebrette were unable to secure the striker on a permanent basis and Napoli ultimately sold him to Samp.

“I won’t celebrate if I score. I played for them and Udine is in my heart,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of Saturday’s clash between the two sides in Serie A.

Serie A moves up UEFA rankings

Serie A has surpassed the Bundesliga in the UEFA rankings, with all three Italian sides winning in the Champions League.

Juventus beat Olympiakos last night while Roma triumphed against Qarabag, adding to Napoli’s 3-1 win over Feyenoord on Tuesday night.

That makes this matchday the first since September 2011 where all three of Italy’s representatives have won, and as things stand it’s enough to make Serie A the third best league in Europe.

Serie A viewing figures drop

The viewing figures for Serie A have dropped by around three million compared to this time last season.

While attendances in the stadiums are up, those watching on television have dropped, just as the rights are up for renewal.

According to the website Calcio e Finanza, the first six league games attracted a total of 35.1m viewers, compared to 38.5m last season.

Tavecchio: ‘Reduce number of teams’

FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio wants to see fewer teams in the professional ranks to “make significant savings for the clubs”.

There has been talk of returning Serie A to 18 teams, while in Serie B and even the regionalised Lega Pro, travelling expenses can be a problem for the smaller sides.

“At the start of next year we’ll start a round table discussion and I hope we can reach a reasonable solution,” Tavecchio told La Politica nel Pallone.

‘Roma & Inter decisive for Montella’

Milan’s upcoming games against Roma and Inter will reportedly decide Vincenzo Montella’s fate as Coach.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Montella met Milan CEO Marco Fassone and sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli, where the trainer was told that the Rossoneri could not lose either match.

Fassone made no secret of his unhappiness after the Diavolo’s 2-0 defeat to Sampdoria, in a sign that the former Blucerchiati boss was already under pressure.

Nainggolan: Serie A more interesting

Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan says he is relishing a “more interesting” Serie A this season after several strong starts.

Napoli, Juve, Inter, Lazio, Roma and Milan all occupy Serie A’s top six, with only seven points separating the sides and the Giallorossi beating Udinese 3-1 on Saturday.

“Too much criticism of this Roma team? For me, it’s too early to talk now,” the midfielder told Roma TV.

“We must keep doing what we’re doing and try to do what the Coach asks of us.
