Xabi Alonso has reportedly closed the door to Liverpool and Bayern Munich by deciding to stay with Bayer Leverkusen, increasing the likelihood that Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi makes the jump.

Alonso has proven himself to be one of the most exciting coaches in world football this season thanks to his incredible work with Leverkusen, who sit 10 points clear of second place Bayern with eight Bundesliga matches left to play. They are also still competing in the DFB-Pokal and the Europa League.

With Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel stepping away from their posts in the summer, Liverpool and Bayern have been looking around for their new head coach and Alonso was on their shortlists alongside other candidates like De Zerbi, who has shined with Brighton.

De Zerbi stocks rise

Fabrizio Romano reported today that Xabi Alonso has now decided to stay with Bayer Leverkusen for next season, closing the door to the interested Liverpool and Bayern, who’ll now have to switch focus to other candidates.

As such, De Zerbi is now in a stronger position to make the jump to one of the two giants at the end of this season. The Italian coach has a €13m release clause in his contract at Brighton and he recently hinted at a move in the summer.
