Milan are preparing for a tough Serie A clash away to Fiorentina, a match that could be the right stage for Vincenzo Italiano to prove himself to the Rossoneri management.

The Rossoneri are in a strange position heading into the final two months of the season; sitting second and comfortable in the top four spots, Stefano Pioli’s side have little to fight for in their remaining nine games, not competing in the Champions League nor Coppa Italia anymore.

Whilst Milan have technically matched the pace set in their recent Scudetto winning season, endless questions have been asked about Pioli’s capabilities in the dugout and a large portion of the fanbase is keen to see the Italian tactician replaced before the start of next season.

A number of possible candidates have been linked with the Milan job over the course of this campaign, including Bologna’s Thiago Motta, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and the unattached Antonio Conte, who is the favourite of advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

One coach who has gone under the radar is Fiorentina’s Italiano; the 46-year-old tactician has reportedly decided to leave Florence when his contract expires in the summer, giving him complete control of his future.

Why Italiano could suit Milan

He has shown a long list of positives during over his last three years with the Viola, taking them to the Europa Conference League and Coppa Italia finals last season and consistently fighting in the European spots, restoring the club’s status after a difficult decade.

Italiano now looks ready to make the jump to a top club and Milan could be the perfect destination. The Fiorentina boss has already shown his strong ability to develop youngsters in his squad and his man-management skills could prove invaluable in the Lombardy capital.

His second-place finishes in the Europa Conference League and Coppa Italia also show his ability to string together a strong cup run, and stronger squad in the form of Milan could help him secure his first titles in the dugout.

Whilst it’s true that Pioli has managed to do a good job in the league this season, despite the negative press, and that Italiano is inexperienced at the highest level, a risk could be exactly what Milan need to close the gap to rivals and champions-in-waiting Inter.
