Soler: 'Gomez Atalanta's best player'

Carlos Soler warns Valencia “need to be wary” of Champions League opponents Atalanta. “Papu Gomez is their best player, not just for his dance.”

The first leg in the Round of 16 kicks off on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT.

“Many might’ve thought this was a good draw for us, but Atalanta are a quality team who find the net with many different players,” Soler told Sky Sport Italia.

You can’t keep La Dea down, as once again they fought back from a trailing situation to beat Roma 2-1 and open up a six-point buffer in fourth place.

Technically, it’s really seven points, because if two teams finish level, their position is decided by head-to-head record.

Gomez: 'Fate brought us through'

Papu Gomez feared he wouldn't play at his old home ground, but in the end managed to help Atalanta overcome Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

The Dea qualified with a 3-0 win against the Ukrainian side and the captain Papu said he needed acupuncture to participate in the important game in his old stadium at Metalist Kharkiv.

When Atalanta prepare to play Valencia in the knockout stages, but Gomez revealed that he had hoped to already play in the prestigious tournament when he first went to Kharkiv in 2013.

Gasp: 'Tough to play for Atalanta'

Gomez: 'Bergamo adopted me'

Atalanta captain Alejandro Gomez has said “it’s an honour” to become an honorary citizen of Bergamo and has claimed the city “has adopted me.”

The Argentine followed coach Gian Piero Gasperini to be rewarded with the title and took to social media to reveal how he became “a better player and a better person” at the Dea.

“It’s a real honour to receive this civic merit in Bergamo,” he wrote on Instagram. “The city has welcomed me since the first year and adopted me as their son.

Gomez made Bergamo honorary citizen

Atalanta captain Alejandro Gomez will be made an honorary citizen of Bergamo for helping the club progress in the Champions League. 

Atalanta qualified for the last 16 in their first-ever Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, making sure Christmas came early in Bergamo this year.

A lot of that was down to Gomez, who has been instrumental in the Dea’s rise since arriving from Metalist Kharkiv in 2014.
