Percassi: 'Memorable Atalanta'

Atalanta President Antonio Percassi confessed their 3-0 victory over Everton “will be remembered for a very long time.”

Argentina snub Higuain again

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain is once again left out of the Argentina squad, but Papu Gomez is included.

The Albiceleste face Peru and Ecuador next month in the final two games of CONMEBOL World Cup qualification.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side currently sit fifth, which would see them enter a play-off with New Zealand in November, but Chile lie just a point behind, and if Argentina slip to sixth they’d miss out on the tournament altogether.

Sampaoli has today named his squad for the two crunch matches, with Higuain again left out.

Amazing Atalanta

The Bergamo outfit outclassed Everton and could progress far in the Europa League, writes Nick Valerio.

The adventure continues. If last season’s quite astonishing fourth place finish hadn’t sunk in, the scale of the achievement will have come to life when Gian Piero Gasperini’s side ruthlessly took apart big-spending Everton.

In a group where Lyon are considered the favourites to qualify, both La Dea and the Toffees knew they were tussling to get a head start, and one team certainly laid down a dominant marker in what was a one-sided contest which proved Atalanta can be a real force in the Europa League.

Serie A Underappreciated XI

With transfer records shattered this summer, Ramez Nathan lists 11 Serie A players who ought to be worth more.

The producers of this season’s soap opera seem to have missed out on a wealth of talent from top playmakers, goal scorers and ruthless defenders not on anybody’s wish list this summer.

Alex Cordaz (Crotone)

The fact that he is 34 years old might be the biggest reason no team approached the goalkeeper. With five clean sheets in the final six fixtures for Crotone last season, Cordaz was the main man that sent Davide Nicola cycling back to his home town in Turin.
