Buffon ‘frustrated’ by Spanish defeats

Gianluigi Buffon explains why he is frustrated by his Spanish defeats. “I’ve always had to greet the same faces and congratulate them…”

Buffon kept goal during Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Spain a fortnight ago and Juventus’ loss to Barcelona by the same scoreline, as well as the Euro 2012 Final and the Bianconeri’s Champions League failures back in May against Real Madrid and two years ago.

One step forward, two steps back

Roma’s encouraging draw with Atletico Madrid was overshadowed by Juventus and Italy's heavy beatings to Barcelona and Spain, writes Jack Stevens.

Italy’s match against Spain at the beginning of September was more than just a qualifier. It was a chance for the Italians to test their new-look Azzurri against the best Europe had to offer, and it was a chance for them to assess their progress under Giampiero Ventura. Consequently, the 3-0 drubbing the Nazionale received was a kick in the teeth, a stark reminder that they have some big decisions to make come Russia in 2018.

Spalletti: I’d have gone 4-2-4

Luciano Spalletti claims “I’d have made the same choices” as Giampiero Ventura against Italy as “that was the way” to beat Spain.

Ventura was heavily criticised for setting up Italy in a 4-2-4 formation against Spain, resulting in a 3-0 defeat for the Azzurri, but Spalletti suggested he would have copied the CT if he was in charge.

“I’m really proud to be here,” the Inter boss told Premium Sport from the Coverciano coaching school.

Ventura: Italy can close gap

Giampiero Ventura believes Italy can close the gap on better national teams “through hard work”.

Italy were thrashed 3-0 by Spain on Saturday, making automatic qualification for the 2018 World Cup a distant possibility, but the Coach hopes the Azzurri can use the result as a “starting point”, beginning against Israel.

“Insigne No 10? I don’t want to make a big deal about it. It’s an important number for Italy and Lorenzo asked to wear it,” he said at a Press conference for Tuesday’s game.

‘Buffon critics make me laugh!’

Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli claims Gianluigi Buffon’s Italy critics “make me laugh” and are “mad”.

Buffon came under fire for not saving at least one of Isco’s two strikes in Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Spain on Saturday, but Barzagli rubbished the idea that his Juventus teammate needed to prove himself again.

“Losing 3-0 isn’t good for Italy, but I think it can make us grow, the youngsters too,” he told Rai Sport ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Israel.

‘Useless to look for Italy scapegoats’

Former Italy CT Roberto Donadoni believes there is no use looking for “scapegoats” but is confident “we’ll pull through” the World Cup playoffs.

Giampiero Ventura is feeling the heat after masterminding Italy to a 3-0 loss against Spain on Saturday, with a lot of the criticism concerning his decision to field a 4-2-4 formation.

“If we want, for once, to behave in a rational and righteous manner, we have to look at the causes of the results rather than the effects,” the Bologna boss told Il Giornale.

Buffon: Could’ve done better

Gianluigi Buffon admits he could have done better with Spain’s goals and that “I didn’t expect them to be so much better” than Italy.

Buffon came in from some criticism after Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Spain on Saturday, especially due to his failure to keep out Isco’s second goal, and the Juventus goalkeeper reflected on the performance both he and the Azzurri gave at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Do I feel responsible? You can always do more with goals,” he told La Repubblica.

Buffon: Why I became a goalkeeper…

Gianluigi Buffon has revealed the inspiration behind him becoming a goalkeeper – former Cameroon goalkeeper Thomas N’Kono.

Speaking to Marca for its Monday edition, Buffon explained how his life changed when he was just 12 years old, during the 1990 World Cup in his homeland.

“When I was little, there was someone mythical in my life: Thomas N’Kono, the Cameroon goalkeeper,” mused the Juventus and Italy veteran.

“I saw him play at the 1990 World Cup and, after Italy, Cameroon were the team of my heart.
