Azzurri celebrate 110 years

The Italian national team hosted France on this day in 1910, signalling not only their first international fixture but also the start of a historic rivalry.

The side initially represented the Kingdom of Italy, given the country did not become a republic until 1946.

Despite the green, white and red of the Tricolor flag, they would dress in Savoy blue, representing the colour of the royal House of Savoy, which reigned over the kingdom.

While the Bundesliga delays its decision on when to restart, in Portugal they should be given the all-clear to play from late May.

The Portuguese Minister for the Economy announced this evening that the tournament ought to be back on track by the end of this month.

That is because open air training will be allowed from Monday May 4.

The Bundesliga was waiting for the all-clear, but today German authorities decided to postpone the decision until next week in order to avoid a potential second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zidane always was a hot-head

Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt on Marco Materazzi wasn’t the only blot on his otherwise-perfect copybook, as Livio Caferoglu explains.

When you think of Italy’s World Cup conquest in 2006, the first image to come to mind should be Fabio Cannavaro standing aloft with the trophy in his arms and confetti raining down behind him. Instead, for 99 percent of those who watched the Azzurri beat France on penalties in Berlin, it’s Zinedine Zidane planting his shiny bald head into the chest of Marco Materazzi.
