U21: Italy Manita with Luxembourg

Italy started their European Under-21 Championship qualifiers with a 5-0 victory over Luxembourg and five different players on target, including Moise Kean.

This was the first competitive match for new Coach Paolo Nicolato, fresh from his impressive work with the Under-20 squad, and he got the qualifying campaign underway with a strong start in Castel di Sangro.

It took just eight minutes for Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca to be brought down for a penalty, converted by his Neroverdi teammate Manuel Locatelli.

Nicolato warns Kean and Zaniolo

Italy begin their U21 Championship qualifiers against Luxembourg and Coach Paolo Nicolato urged Moise Kean and Nicolò Zaniolo to “learn from their mistakes.”

The Azzurrini play tomorrow, in a group with Sweden, Armenia, Iceland and the Republic of Ireland.

“It’s not a particularly easy group, as there are sides like Iceland and Ireland who are improving, while Sweden are at a good level, but we want to give our best and improve,” Nicolato told Radio Rai.

Zaniolo's mother accepts Italy punishment

Nicolò Zaniolo’s mother assures he is “very happy at Roma,” she sees Italy Coach Roberto Mancini as a footballing co-parent and shrugs off Lazio insults.

The midfielder just turned 20 a few weeks ago and had been part of the senior Azzurri squad, but was demoted to the Under-21 side with Moise Kean for unprofessional behaviour during the European U21 Championship.

Kean & Zaniolo in Italy U21 squad

Moise Kean and Nicolo Zaniolo, as expected, have been called up to Italy’s Under-21 squad for their September internationals.

The Everton striker and Roma midfielder stay with the Azzurrini after they were late for a team meeting before Italy’s final European Under-21 Championship fixture against Belgium in June.

The upcoming international break is Paolo Nicolato’s first since replacing Luigi Di Biagio as CT of the U21s.

Di Biagio: 'I did not fail with U21s'

Gigi Di Biagio insists he “did not fail” as Italy Under-21 Coach and is looking for a new job, while evaluating Daniele De Rossi and Mario Balotelli moves.

The tactician was at the helm of perhaps the strongest Azzurrini squad in years, but didn’t get beyond the group stage in the European Under-21 Championship this summer.

“That particular tournament was probably a failure, but not the overall work I did over the years in charge of the Under-21 team,” insisted Di Biagio on Sky Sport Italia.

Italy change U-20 and U-19 Coaches

Italy have named Daniele Franceschini as the new Under-20 Coach, with Alberto Bollini taking over the Under-19 team.

The various youth levels of the Nazionale have been shaken up this summer with Luigi Di Biagio leaving the Under-21 post, to be replaced by former Under-20 Coach Paolo Nicolato.

In turn, Nicolato is replaced at the Under-20 level by Franceschini, who steps up after two seasons on the Under-18 bench.

The new Under-19 Italy boss is former Lecce, Salernitana and Modena Coach Bollini.

Ceferin: 'Never again that Italy exit'

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin admits the next European U21 Championship will have 16 teams to avoid the situation that saw Italy eliminated.

The tournament final is tonight between Germany and Spain, but there was controversy after the hosts crashed out.

The current format has three groups of four teams, with only the group winners and best runner-up going through to the semi-finals.

As Italy were in Group A, France and Romania knew they could draw two days later and both qualify at the expense of Italy.
