Nicolato: 'Tonali promotion a problem'

Italy Under-21 boss Paolo Nicolato admits that while Sandro Tonali’s senior promotion “gives us a lot of pleasure, it also gives us some problems.”

Tonalo was drafted into the full Italy squad after Marco Verratti pulled out, leaving Nicolato with mixed feelings as he also had Fiorentina’s Gaetano Castrovilli pinched.

“It gives us a lot of pleasure, but it also gives us some problems,” he said at a Press conference.

Talent not enough for Azzurrini

Football Italia’s Chief Correspondent Richard Hall looks at the new era for the Italian U21 side, but seemingly with the same old problems.

After what seemed like constant disappointment, there is a new feeling of hope with Italy’s U21 team. There has never been any doubt around the talent at the Coach’s disposal, but that hasn’t stopped the team performing well below the levels expected.

Exiting at the group stage in a European Championship they were hosting was utterly unacceptable, so Gigi Di Biagio had to go. Now they have a new man in charge and so far results have been mixed ahead of today’s trip to Armenia.

Nicolato: 'Kean is still just a kid'

Italy U21 Coach Paolo Nicolato prepares for Armenia and warns Moise Kean is immature. “On an emotional level, he’s still a kid.”

The Azzurrini won their first qualifier for the 2021 European Championships, then drew 0-0 away to the Republic of Ireland, so the pressure is on for tomorrow’s trip to Armenia.

'Kean fell for Irish provocation'

Italy U21 Coach Paolo Nicolato told off Moise Kean after a red card against the Republic of Ireland. “We shouldn’t have fallen for their provocation.”

It was only the Azzurrini’s second game of the European Under-21 Championship qualifying group, whereas Ireland had already won their three matches.

U21: Kean sees red in Ireland

Moise Kean came off the bench and saw red in an ill-tempered and often ugly 0-0 draw between Italy U21s and the Republic of Ireland, with both teams down to 10 men.

The hosts had already won their three games so far in the European Under-21 Championship qualifying group, while the Azzurrini beat Luxembourg 5-0 in their only match.

Troy Parrott was fortunate to only get a yellow card for his awful studs-up tackle on Sandro Tonali’s ankle just 12 minutes in, but there is no VAR at this level.

It kicks off in Dublin at 20.05 UK time and is the Azzurrini’s second game in this qualifying group, whereas Ireland have already won all three of their fixtures.

U21: Nicolato respects Ireland

Italy U21 Coach Paolo Nicolato expects a tough test against group leaders the Republic of Ireland, but “we want attacking football and possession.”

The Azzurrini visit Dublin on Thursday at 20.05 UK time and due to a complex schedule, this is only their second game in Group 1, the qualifiers for the 2021 European Under-21 Championship.

Ireland have won all three of their matches so far and lead the group, followed by Iceland with six points from two and Italy on three points.

U21: Italy Manita with Luxembourg

Italy started their European Under-21 Championship qualifiers with a 5-0 victory over Luxembourg and five different players on target, including Moise Kean.

This was the first competitive match for new Coach Paolo Nicolato, fresh from his impressive work with the Under-20 squad, and he got the qualifying campaign underway with a strong start in Castel di Sangro.

It took just eight minutes for Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca to be brought down for a penalty, converted by his Neroverdi teammate Manuel Locatelli.
