Di Biagio: 'U21 improvement'

Gigi Di Biagio saw “an improvement, but we have to do much better” after the Italy Under-21 side beat Albania 3-1 in a friendly.

The Azzurrini needed the boost after last week’s humiliating 3-0 loss to Slovakia.

“Bringing home a victory is always pleasing, but I look more at the football than the result,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

U21: Italy beat Albania

Italy Under-21s ultimately deserved their 3-1 victory over Albania, even if there was a flurry of three goals in injury time and Patrick Cutrone went off injured.

The Azzurrini were smarting after a 3-0 friendly defeat to Slovakia last week, their heaviest loss in the Gigi Di Biagio era. The Coach made many changes for this other friendly at the Sardegna Arena in Cagliari, including Milan striker Patrick Cutrone and Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli.

Ankle sprain for Cutrone

Milan striker Patrick Cutrone limped off with a suspected sprained ankle during the Italy Under-21 side’s friendly against Albania.

The centre-forward was in the starting XI for the match at the Sardegna Arena in Cagliari.

He had several great chances to open the scoring, forcing a save, volleying just wide and attempting an audacious overhead kick.

However, Cutrone’s ankle was caught under him and, despite his protestations, the medical staff ordered a substitution after 37 minutes.

Di Biagio: 'No response to Sacchi'

Sacchi: 'Balo lacking intelligence'

Arrigo Sacchi criticised Italy for their performance against Poland, singling out Mario Balotelli as an example of lacking “intelligence.”

The Azzurri recovered from a Piotr Zielinski opener with a Jorginho penalty for the 1-1 Nations League opener and will face Portugal in Lisbon on Monday evening.

“I’d say that it’s a team sport. You need only a few ideas in football, but they have to be clear,” Sacchi told Radio Deejay.
