The sky's the limit for Atalanta

La Dea have maintained the core of the side that drew plaudits both at home and abroad last season, and Owen Diana believes they can do even better in 2020-21.

The dawn of a new campaign is always exciting for any football fan, but that is especially true when your team has resided in dreamland for the last two years. Consecutive third-placed finishes and a trip to the Champions League quarter-finals were unprecedented for Atalanta, but they seem well placed to follow up those historic feats with further success in 2020-21. Finishing in the top four and reaching the knockout stages in Europe’s premier cup competition should be the minimum aim. However, a tilt at domestic and continental glory is not out of the question.

Inside Number Nine

A summer spree on old-school centre-forwards points to a new fashion in Serie A leaving the False Nine behind, writes Owen Diana.

As is the case with the fashion industry, Italy has long been known as an innovator in the world of football. The Metodo approach inspired the Azzurri to consecutive World Cup titles in the 1930s. Three decades later, Helenio Herrera’s Catenaccio delivered back-to-back European Cup triumphs for Inter.

Gasperini: 'Ilicic probably out with PSG'

Gian Piero Gasperini explains why Atalanta have been struggling lately after a 2-1 win over Parma and admits Josip Ilicic might not be able to face PSG.

La Dea fought back from a Dejan Kulusevski goal to get the points at the Stadio Tardini with Ruslan Malinovskyi’s free kick and a Papu Gomez solo effort.

That temporarily put them in second place, awaiting Inter’s match with Napoli this evening.

They might both be giants

The two best teams in Italy since the restart proved to Giancarlo Rinaldi just how far Atalanta have come and what the future holds for Milan.

It speaks volumes, however, that it was much more of a surprise for Milan to be setting such a pace than it was for Atalanta. Their match in the eerily quiet San Siro told us how far one team had come and the journey still facing the other.

Same Atalanta, different Milan

Atalanta humiliated Milan back in December, but Vilizar Yakimov warns that Stefano Pioli’s men are eager to prove just how much they’ve changed in half a season.

Just how much can a team change after one defeat? That’s the question that popped up when re-watching Atalanta’s 5-0 win over Milan in Week 17. It was seven months ago in real time, but still technically only half a season away.

In fact, a case might be made that the defeat in Bergamo was the turning point in Milan’s campaign, as Stefano Pioli’s men have lost only two games since then.
