Napoli lose to Benevento

Napoli lost their first pre-season friendly, falling 2-1 to Benevento after defensive errors from Nikola Maksimovic and Sebastiano Luperto.

Roberto Insigne, Lorenzo’s younger brother and a former Napoli youth team product, almost opened the scoring within nine minutes, but his strike thumped the upright.

The Partenopei had taken the lead with Jose Callejon scoring the first goal of the summer on an Amin Younes assist.

Official: Benevento appoint Inzaghi

Pippo Inzaghi has officially been appointed as the new Coach of Serie B side Benevento.

The tactician terminated his contract with Bologna by mutual consent, having been fired in January, so he could be free for this new adventure.

A statement from Benevento confirmed Inzaghi signed a one-year deal with option for a second term.

Former Milan player Inzaghi started his management career at San Siro, but only lasted one season, then managed seven months with Bologna.

Benevento have officially signed Roberto Insigne – Lorenzo’s brother – from Napoli following his loan spell.

The 25-year-old is a right-sided winger with a strong left foot, the opposite to his sibling.

He scored 10 goals and provided 12 assists in 30 appearances for Benevento this season between Serie B, the promotion play-offs and Coppa Italia.

Le Streghe have now taken up their option to buy and he signed a contract to June 2021.

Le Streghe and Bucchi reached an agreement to part company this afternoon, not renewing his contract after just one year.

The 42-year-old former Sassuolo tactician joined Benevento last summer and oversaw a third-place finish in Serie B on 60 points, missing out on automatic promotion, but qualifying for the play-offs.

Serie B Play-Offs: Benevento collapse

Cittadella earned a shock 3-0 away victory to knock Benevento out of the Serie B promotion play-off semi-finals, 4-2 on aggregate.

The first leg had put the ball firmly in Benevento’s court, as they picked up a 2-1 away victory.

However, that was thrown away by half-time at the Stadio Vigorito, as Davide Diaw struck on a rapid counter-attack, then Giuseppe Panico’s right-foot strike took a deflection off Nicolas Viola to beat Montipe at the near post.
