De Ligt: 'Trying to learn from Juve'

Matthijs de Ligt is ‘trying to learn’ from Juventus teammates Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, but reveals he didn’t want to be a defender at first.

The 20-year-old centre-back came through the legendary Ajax academy and earned himself a €85m transfer to Turin last summer.

“It is important to know for yourself if you’re mentally right; if you’re ready, nobody can stop you,” he told Champions Journal.

Raiola most influential Dutchman

Agent Mino Raiola, who was born in Italy, has been named the most influential Dutchman in the football industry. “It took a long time for the public to understand me.”

The 52-year-old represents the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Matthijs de Ligt and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

He won the Voetbal International poll of 50 Dutch figures in the sport, ahead of Ronald Koeman and in third place Johan Cruijff, even four years after his death.

Mancini: 'Italy play to win Nations League'

Roberto Mancini said Italy “always play to win” as they prepare for the Nations League against the Netherlands, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Poland.

The draw was made this evening and the Azzurri will be in League A, Group 1.

“Clearly, the teams were all quite strong. It’s a good group, although we can really only evaluate them after Euro 2020, as there could be a change of coach and players, so very different teams,” Mancini told Rai Sport.

De Vrij minor injury concern

Inter defender Stefan de Vrij has pulled out of Holland’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Northern Ireland with a minor injury.

The centre-back had been due to start this evening in Belfast.

Instead, he is not even on the bench for this game, as he is not fully fit.

According to Fox Sports and Mediaset Premium, it is not a serious injury and De Vrij agreed with coach Ronald Koeman to sit this one out.

He felt a twinge during yesterday’s training session and preferred not to risk further damage, awaiting more tests.

Casarin: 'Handball rule unreasonable'

Former referee Paolo Casarin blasted the new handball rules and increased use of VAR. “Reason is dying in football and the referee is being delegitimised, but we must stop play for racist abuse.”

The changes to the handball interpretation has to all intents and purposes ruled out the difference between a voluntary block and involuntary ricochet.

“I saw the penalty they gave against Matthijs de Ligt,” Casarin wrote in the Corriere dello Sport, referring to the Euro 2020 qualifier between the Netherlands and Germany.

The Great Wall of the Women's World Cup

Italy defeating China was an impressive outcome, but Andrea Tallarita believes that in this Women's World Cup the real test of might is only just beginning.

It really would have taken a small miracle for China to beat Italy. The ladies from the Far East had a well-organised squad, but their greatest weakness coincided with the Azzurre's outstanding strength: having scored only once in their three games to that point, the Chinese were as bad at banging goals in as our girls are at keeping them out.

Since Italy has also shown some considerable attacking prowess, it seemed natural – all tactical permutations aside – to expect the girls in blue to outscore their opponents, and this is exactly what happened.
