Casarin: 'Handball rule unreasonable'

Former referee Paolo Casarin blasted the new handball rules and increased use of VAR. “Reason is dying in football and the referee is being delegitimised, but we must stop play for racist abuse.”

The changes to the handball interpretation has to all intents and purposes ruled out the difference between a voluntary block and involuntary ricochet.

“I saw the penalty they gave against Matthijs de Ligt,” Casarin wrote in the Corriere dello Sport, referring to the Euro 2020 qualifier between the Netherlands and Germany.

The Great Wall of the Women's World Cup

Italy defeating China was an impressive outcome, but Andrea Tallarita believes that in this Women's World Cup the real test of might is only just beginning.

It really would have taken a small miracle for China to beat Italy. The ladies from the Far East had a well-organised squad, but their greatest weakness coincided with the Azzurre's outstanding strength: having scored only once in their three games to that point, the Chinese were as bad at banging goals in as our girls are at keeping them out.

Since Italy has also shown some considerable attacking prowess, it seemed natural – all tactical permutations aside – to expect the girls in blue to outscore their opponents, and this is exactly what happened.

It kicks off on Saturday at 14.00 UK time (13.00 GMT), while the other quarter-finals are Norway-England, France-USA and Germany-Sweden.

The Dutch side thanked a brace from Lieke Martens, but above all her ice cool stoppage-time penalty to decide the 2-1 victory.

U17 Euros: Italy prepare for Final

Italy will take on the Netherlands in today’s European Under-17 Championship Final in Dublin and could match a tournament record.

The Azzurrini and Coach Carmine Nunziata are seeking revenge for last year’s Final, which they lost on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

It would be the first ever Italy victory in this competition, having lost the Final on penalties to Russia in 2013.

Verdi confirms Napoli move

Simone Verdi essentially confirmed he has agreed to join Napoli and explained his decision to reject a January transfer. “I wanted to show my gratitude.”

The Bologna winger started with Lorenzo Insigne and Jorginho in tonight’s 1-1 friendly draw between Italy and the Netherlands.

“We got on pretty well, but the players can change, the important thing is that the team interprets the style of football the Coach wants,” Verdi told Rai Sport.

Bonaventura: 'Azzurri need time'

Giacomo Bonaventura believes Italy need time to develop, but the 1-1 draw with the Netherlands “wasn’t a bad performance.”

Simone Zaza had opened the scoring, but moments later Domenico Criscito was sent off, paving the way for a late Nathan Ake equaliser.

“I’ve played in a three-man midfield practically all season, I’m happy there and I think I do it pretty well,” the Milan midfielder told Rai Sport.

Mancini: 'Italy were naive'

Roberto Mancini felt the referee could’ve avoided Domenico Criscito’s red card, but acknowledged the “naïve” 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.

Simone Zaza had only just given Italy the lead in Turin when Criscito was shown a straight red card for a mistimed tackle on Ryan Babel.

“It was a friendly, I don’t know if that was really a red card,” the Coach told Rai Sport.
