Buffon right to reject swansong

Gigi Buffon’s decision to refuse an international swansong at the Juventus Stadium is the correct call, writes Richard Thomas.

Insigne to captain Italy on birthday

Lorenzo Insigne is set to be the captain on his birthday when Italy face the Netherlands in tomorrow’s friendly.

It kicks off at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin on Monday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Coach Roberto Mancini already announced his starting XI in the Press conference for this third match of his reign, after a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia and 3-1 defeat to France.

The Nazionale armband always goes to the player with the most caps, and as this is a very experimental line-up, that man is Insigne.

Azzurri and Oranje rebuild

Italy and the Netherlands are the notable absentees from this summer’s World Cup and both must now look to the future, writes Nick Valerio.

Superpowers Italy and Holland go head-to-head on Monday in a World Cup warm-up friendly. Except neither of them are going to the tournament in Russia.

For Ronald Koeman’s men, the pain of missing out on a major competition dates back to Euro 2016 when the Oranje failed to even get a play-off berth in qualifying. Meanwhile, opponents on the night Italy will hope their embarrassing and well documented failure to reach Russia is a one-off, as life under new Coach Roberto Mancini begins to take shape.
