Zidane always was a hot-head

Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt on Marco Materazzi wasn’t the only blot on his otherwise-perfect copybook, as Livio Caferoglu explains.

When you think of Italy’s World Cup conquest in 2006, the first image to come to mind should be Fabio Cannavaro standing aloft with the trophy in his arms and confetti raining down behind him. Instead, for 99 percent of those who watched the Azzurri beat France on penalties in Berlin, it’s Zinedine Zidane planting his shiny bald head into the chest of Marco Materazzi.

Totti's Italy triumphs and disasters

Francesco Totti will always be a Roma legend, but Tommaso Adami explains his time representing Italy had as many lows as it did world-beating highs.

June 26, 2006. Italy are playing Australia in the World Cup Round of 16. It’s already into stoppages, and a man is carrying the nerves of an entire nation on his shoulders. As he's waiting for the referee to blow the whistle, a cameraman zooms in on his green eyes, coldly staring at an indefinite spot before him. It was like a Sergio Leone spaghetti western, a duel to the death.

On this day: Italy win the World Cup!

On this day in 2006, Italy beat France on penalties to win their fourth World Cup.

The Azzurri had come into the tournament under the shadow of the Calciopoli scandal, but a semi-final win over hosts Germany booked their place in the final.

CT Marcello Lippi opted for the same team which started the match in Dortmund, with Francesco Totti preferred to Alessandro Del Piero in attack.

It was a nightmare start for the Azzurri though, as referee Benito Archundia awarded Les Bleus a penalty after just six minutes.
