Montella: 'Not just my mistakes'

Vincenzo Montella wrote an open letter following his Fiorentina dismissal. “Mistakes were made, not just by us. It was clearly meant to be a transitional season, but it’s right that I act as lightning rod.”

The coach was sacked today after a 4-1 home defeat to Roma, as the Viola have only four wins, five draws and eight defeats in Serie A this term.

Official: Fiorentina fire Montella

Fiorentina have sacked Vincenzo Montella after last night’s 4-1 home defeat to Roma, but will wait before appointing a replacement.

The decision was somewhat inevitable, as since returning to the Stadio Franchi on April 10, Montella has lost 13 of his total 24 Serie A games in charge.

He amassed only 19 points out of an available 72, including one point in the last six rounds, earned with a stoppage-time equaliser against Inter last week.

Fiorentina seek Montella replacement

Fiorentina have decided to sack Vincenzo Montella, with Luciano Spalletti the ideal replacement, but Beppe Iachini or Gigi Di Biagio are more likely.

The Viola practically dismissed their coach last night following a 4-1 home defeat to Roma, leaving them with one point from the last six Serie A rounds.

Since returning to the Fiorentina bench in April, Montella had 27 competitive matches in charge, managing just six wins, seven draws and 14 defeats.

Viola lagging behind Roma

Roma proved they are at a far more advanced stage of their American project in every sense compared to Fiorentina, writes Giancarlo Rinaldi.

When Italy sent its sons and daughters overseas, it could hardly have dreamed of nights like these: two of Serie A’s most famous sides going head to head under the ownership of those who ended up in the States to seek their fortune. It will be James Pallotta who enjoys bragging rights over Rocco Commisso the next time they meet at some country club.

Prade: 'Montella replacement tough'

Fiorentina director of sport Daniele Pradè practically confirmed Vincenzo Montella’s dismissal. “It’s not easy to find a strong replacement, but patience has its limits.”

For the second season in a row, the Viola are flirting with relegation, as this evening’s 4-1 home defeat to Roma means they picked up one point in the last six Serie A rounds.

“It’s a very tough moment, we can only apologise to the fans,” Pradè told Radio Bruno.

Montella: 'Roma still in my heart'

Vincenzo Montella admits “a piece of my heart” still lies with Roma but insists Fiorentina have shown they can play on “equal terms with the best”.

Montella won the Scudetto with Roma in 2001 and had a stint coaching their first team, but the 45-year-old desperately needs a win to stop Fiorentina’s slide, with their last Serie A victory coming back in October.

“A piece of my heart is in Rome,” he said at a press conference.

Montella: 'Defeat would've been harsh'

Vincenzo Montella insists Fiorentina fully deserved at least a draw against Inter, but admits his job isn’t secure yet. “I will always be under pressure.”

It looked as if his tenure would be over when Borja Valero gave Inter the lead, but deep into stoppages, Dusan Vlahovic ran from his own half to score a stunning equaliser.

This 1-1 draw ends a run of four consecutive Serie A defeats for the Viola.
