Montella: 'Why not at least check VAR?'

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella was furious at the referee for not checking VAR on the winning Lazio goal. “That’s what it’s there for.”

The Viola were beaten 2-1 by a late Ciro Immobile header, but the issue was Jordan Lukaku winning back the ball from Riccardo Sottil – seemingly with a foul – to then provide the assist.

Fiorentina deny Chiesa dive

Fiorentina have leapt to the defence of Federico Chiesa after the winger was booked for diving against Brescia.

Chiesa was shown a yellow card for perceived simulation in the Brescia box during last night’s 0-0 draw and was substituted moments later, provoking an angry reaction from the Fiorentina youngster.

It is the latest in a growing list of incidents where the Italy international has been accused of diving, but sporting director Daniele Prade suggested the referee had acted out of line himself.

Pioli set up as just another Milan flop

Stefano Pioli is only the latest poor sap to take the thankless task of leading Milan, as Susy Campanale identifies the real culprits.

People have noted that political satires like The Thick of It and Veep are providing scenarios less ridiculous than the ones we see playing out on the news every day now. The chaos at AC Milan feels much the same. There comes a point when ‘banter era’ doesn’t really cover it. This is a club without a plan, a leader, an identity, just endless half-thought-out projects that are thrown out to the public before they’ve been properly vetted, then abandoned once enough negative feedback arrives.

Endless parade of Milan managers

Since Max Allegri was fired in January 2014, Milan have had eight different tacticians on their bench and Stefano Pioli will make it nine.

The Rossoneri have seen a constant turnaround of Coaches, not helped by the fact that during that same period, the club has been under three different owners and a multitude of directors.

Following Allegri’s dismissal in January 2014, Milan had assistant manager Mauro Tassotti take charge of one game before Clarence Seedorf saw out the season.

'Ribery-Chiesa like Di Natale-Alexis'

Franck Ribery and Federico Chiesa can be for Fiorentina what Antonio Di Natale and Alexis Sanchez were at Udinese, claims Francesco Guidolin.

The two clubs face off today at 11.30 UK time (10.30 GMT), click here for a match preview.

After a little tactical tinkering, Coach Vincenzo Montella seems to have settled on a 3-5-2 formation for the Viola, with 36-year-old Ribery partnering Chiesa, who turns 22 later this month.

No way back for this Milan

It’s difficult to see how Marco Giampaolo and Milan can recover from the abject defeat to Fiorentina, as Kaustubh Pandey analyses what went wrong.

In what was another harrowing night at San Siro, Marco Giampaolo’s Milan ambled to an embarrassing defeat against Vincenzo Montella’s Fiorentina. The 3-1 result, if anything, flattered the hosts.

La Viola came into the game after grabbing their first win in 18 rounds, beating struggling Sampdoria 2-1 in midweek. The Rossoneri lost to Torino on Thursday, but for an hour played their best football of the season, so maintained the same XI and 4-3-3 system, but with radically different results.

Vincenzo Montella explained how he developed his Fiorentina tactics and will continue to evolve, but assured there is no “sense of revenge” against Milan.

The Viola ran riot at San Siro with a 3-1 victory, though it could’ve been more had Gianluigi Donnarumma not saved Federico Chiesa’s penalty.
