Belotti ‘happy’ at Torino

Andrea Belotti has dropped his biggest hint yet that he will stay at Torino this summer. “I’m happy, we’ll work to make up for no European football.”

Belotti had been linked with a fresh start at Milan after a campaign that saw him take until Torino’s 2-1 win against SPAL on the penultimate matchday to register his 10th Serie A goal – 18 less than his tally for 2016-17.

Nonetheless, the striker told Sport Italia: “I’m happy at Torino and I have a contract with the club.

Toro: Mazzarri & Belotti staying

Torino owner Urbano Cairo has confirmed that the club ‘will start over’ with Walter Mazzarri and Andrea Belotti next season.

Mazzarri has managed to steady the ship at Torino since replacing Sinisa Mihajlovic midseason, while Belotti has put a knee injury behind him, despite the goals drying up for the Italy striker.

“This season didn’t go as we wanted, now there’s more regret on our part,” Cairo said after Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Napoli.

Sirigu set for long Toro stay

Goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu is set for a long stay at Torino, according to President Urbano Cairo.

Sirigu replaced Joe Hart as Torino’s No 1 on a two-year contract last summer and has gone on to keep 10 clean sheets in 35 Serie A appearances, although the former Italy custodian could do little about the Granata’s last two defeats to Atalanta and Lazio.

“We’re not at our best physically: we’ve had several injuries and I think that’s been the problem,” Cairo said after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to the latter.

Cairo: ‘I wanted Gasperini’

Torino President Urbano Cairo reveals he wanted to appoint Gian Piero Gasperini in 2015 but Giampiero Ventura “decided to continue”.

The tactician has been lauded for his work with Atalanta, taking them into the Europa League last season and having them in contention again this year.

“Very few Coaches can get the best out of young players like he does,” Cairo told Tuttosport.

“I wanted to take him to Toro in 2015, but he was tied to Genoa for another year of contract.

Cairo: Only €100m for Belotti

Torino President Urbano Cairo is standing by his €100m valuation of Andrea Belotti after putting his lack of goals this season down to ‘bad luck’.

Injuries and a loss of form has seen Belotti score just nine goals in Serie A this season, compared to the 26 he managed in 2017-18, but Cairo insists the striker is still worth his €100m release clause.

“On Belotti, I’ve never wavered: this season is only down to bad luck,” he told Tuttosport.

Cairo: ‘Torino won’t step aside’

Torino President Urbano Cairo assures “we’ll try to honour the league” ahead of the Napoli game in two weeks.

The Granata are out of Europa League contention and safe from relegation, and they face the Partenopei in Week 36.

Maurizio Sarri’s side are just a point behind Juventus, Toro’s city rivals, at the top of Serie A, but the President assures there’ll be no favours.

“We’ll try to honour the league, as it should be,” Cairo said on Gr Parlamento.

Cairo jabs at Mihajlovic

Torino President Urbano Cairo aims a jab at former Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic - “Walter Mazzarri’s work is bearing fruit… did you see what the team was before?”

The Granata drew 1-1 with Milan last night, and still have an outside chance of qualifying for next season’s Europa League.

“We played a great game against a Milan team that stopped Napoli last Sunday,” Cairo told journalists as he left the stadium.

Belotti still on Milan radar

Andrea Belotti has battled injuries and difficult form, but Milan should still take a hard look at him, writes Matthew Santangelo

Andrea Belotti’s 2016-17 Serie A campaign put him on the map not only in Italy, but all over Europe due to his tenacity in the final third and knack for finding the net. His 26 goals saw him finish third in the scoring charts behind Edin Dzeko and Dries Mertens, and ahead of household names like Gonzalo Higuain, Mauro Icardi and Ciro Immobile.

These numbers were all indicative of a breakout few expected early on in his career, prompting several clubs to ramp up their efforts last summer in order to lure him away from Turin.
