Candreva in doubt for Barcelona

Antonio Candreva remains a huge doubt to feature for Inter in their Champions League clash with Barcelona on Tuesday.

The Nerazzurri know that a victory at San Siro would mathematically secure their place in the Round of 16.

Candreva went off at half-time in last night’s 0-0 draw with Roma at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

He pulled up clutching his lower back and, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he was not feeling any better this morning.

Big impact for Smalling

Chris Smalling has been a revelation for Roma and never more impressive than neutralising Inter’s Romelu Lukaku, writes Emmet Gates.

England boss Gareth Southgate chose the right game to take a weekend break to Milan and watch Serie A’s most in-form defender, Chris Smalling.

Southgate had obviously heard the good reports emanating out of Italy about Smalling’s performances since arriving in the Eternal City, and with Euro 2020 around the corner, decided to see what all the fuss was about.

Inter-Roma understudies disappoint

Inter and Roma were expected to put on a Friday night show at San Siro, but Martin Mork watched a disappointing spectacle without some top stars.

The anticipation and the media build-up before the clash between two of Italy’s giants drew parallels with the greatest pieces from the Italian opera. In the end, the reviews weren’t looking very good for either of the protagonists at La Scala del Calcio.

Southgate watches Smalling

England boss Gareth Southgate was in the stands during Roma’s match with Inter at San Siro last night to watch Chris Smalling.

The Daily Mirror reports that Southgate, along with assistant Steve Holland, are assessing their defensive options ahead of Euro 2020 and wanted to see the on-loan Manchester United defender in action.

Smalling hasn’t played for The Three Lions since June 2017, but has been impressive since joining the Giallorossi on a season-long loan.

De Paul: 'Conte one of the best'

Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul believes Inter coach Antonio Conte is “one of the three best in the world,” alongside Pep Guardiola and Maurizio Sarri, "but don't ask in what order."

The Argentina international was speaking to the Corriere dello Sport on a number of topics, and was asked where his best position is.

“I like to play as a mezz'ala, either in a two or a three man midfield. I play in a two with the international team, usually with [Leandro] Paredes next to me. With Udinese I play in a three.

Conte: 'Inter had chances to win'

Fonseca: 'Roma must improve in attack'

Paulo Fonseca praised Roma “courage” after a goalless draw with Inter, but “we really need to do better on the final attacking movements.”

The Giallorossi were forced to reshuffle their XI, as Pau Lopez picked up a muscular injury this morning and Edin Dzeko was unable to start due to a flu virus, so Nicolò Zaniolo was surprisingly used as a False 9.

Antonio Mirante proved decisive in goal, making two big saves on Romelu Lukaku and Matias Vecino.
