AVB: ‘Roma, Inter wanted me’

Andre Villas-Boas confirms “Italy obviously interests me”, and reveals “over the years I’ve had contact with Inter and Roma”.

The 41-year-old rose to fame at Porto before spells at Chelsea, Zenit St Petersburg and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, he has been out of work since 2017 after leaving Shanghai SIPG to drive the Dakar rally.

“Italy obviously interests me,” Villas-Boas, who was Jose Mourinho’s assistant at Inter, told Corriere dello Sport.

Ranieri’s arrival at Fulham comes just two years since he led Leicester City from the bottom of the Premier League to the first title in their history but also at a time when the Cottagers are leaking goals, with 31 conceded in their opening 12 games.

“We have to work hard,” said the former Juventus, Roma and Inter boss at his official unveiling on Thursday.

Ankle injury for Manolas

Roma are holding their breath after Kostas Manolas appeared to sprain his ankle while playing for Greece.

The defender started this evening’s Nations League match against Finland in Athens.

However, he went down clutching his right ankle in clear pain during the first half and had to be replaced.

Initial reports suggest it is a sprain, although more tests are required to ascertain the extent of the damage.

Roma have a Serie A trip to Udinese coming up next week, then Real Madrid in the Champions League and a showdown with Inter.

Candreva: 'Inter not up to standard'

The Nerazzurri had won seven Serie A games in a row before the devastating 4-1 defeat to Atalanta.

“We know that performance was not up to standard, but it’s difficult to talk about it right now. We are aware of our strengths and our quality. We are Inter and must learn from our mistakes,” Candreva told Sky Sport Italia.

PSG had approached Marotta

Former Juventus director Beppe Marotta is ready to join Inter, but he had been in talks with Paris Saint-Germain, it’s reported.

It is widely believed Marotta will put pen to paper with Inter as their new CEO within days.

He had overseen the record-breaking seven consecutive Serie A titles at Juve, but was pushed out by President Andrea Agnelli.

Inter weren’t the only club interested, as Paris United claim Marotta had held negotiations with PSG representatives a few weeks ago.

Inter need €50m for FFP

Inter will have to make around €50m of player sales by June 30 to meet their Financial Fair Play obligations, according to reports.

The Nerazzurri are still operating under restrictions as part of a settlement agreement with UEFA, which was extended into a fourth year.

In previous seasons they have used the sales of young players to ensure they break even for the reporting period, usually allowing them to leave with buyback options.

Gasperini: ‘Inter can dethrone Juventus’

Atalanta Coach Gian Piero Gasperini believes Inter could be the team to “throw Juventus off the throne”, and wouldn’t sign for a Europa League place now.

The 60-year-old had an ill-fated period on the bench at San Siro, lasting just five games with four defeats and a draw.

His Orobici side thrashed the Nerazzurri at the weekend, so there must have been a temptation to lord it over the visiting fans, as Jose Mourinho did with the Juventus supporters.
