The two faces of Rome

Roma trashed Istanbul Basaksehir, but Lazio lost to CFR Cluj and Vilizar Yakimov saw the same patterns repeating themselves.

It wouldn’t be harsh to say that for yet another year Italian teams haven’t really started the Europa League season in an impressive fashion.

In fact, the problems for the Serie A participants began even before the campaign started, as Milan withdrew from the tournament in order to avoid sanctions for breaking UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Regulations. Shortly after Torino, who took the place of the Rossoneri, suffered two disappointing defeats against a very good, but beatable Wolverhampton Wanderers side.

Inzaghi: 'Lazio deserved more'

Simone Inzaghi insists Lazio “deserved more” after their 2-1 defeat to Cluj. “I am convinced we’ll qualify” from the Europa League group.

Once again, just days after the same result at SPAL, the Aquile threw away a lead to lose 2-1 on their travels.

“Without doubt, as is often the case, we deserved more and it’s a very disappointing result,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Inzaghi: 'It's Lazio's own fault'

Simone Inzaghi admits Lazio “must learn from our mistakes” after throwing away a lead to lose 2-1 at SPAL. “It’s our own fault.”

The Aquile had seemed to be in control after Ciro Immobile’s penalty and barely ran any risks for an hour, but seemed to take their foot off the gas too early and allowed the comeback.

“It’s a bad defeat and we weren’t the usual Lazio in the second half,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

Inzaghi: 'Lazio left with Derby regrets'

Simone Inzaghi felt “regret and disappointment” that Lazio only drew 1-1 with city rivals Roma. “We had so many chances and you have to win games like that.”

The Aquile rattled the frame of the goal four times and had a last-gasp Manuel Lazzari strike disallowed in this 1-1 draw.

“Considering the game overall, there is real regret and disappointment, because we had 21 shots on goal and hit the woodwork four times,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

Lazio v Roma: Tactical Preview

Simone Inzaghi and Paulo Fonseca have differing approaches to football and could make for a fascinating clash at the Olimpico, writes Steven Moore.

From the Capital of Italy, the Biancocelesti will take on the Giallorossi in Week 2 of the 2019-20 Serie A season. This will be the 151st time that they will meet at the Stadio Olimpico since the inauguration of the Italian top-flight in 1929. While Simone Inzaghi’s side started off their campaign with flying colours, crushing Sampdoria 3-0 at Marassi, Paulo Fonseca’s team dropped a lead three times for their six-goal thriller with Genoa.

Capital clubs resisted poachers

Lazio and Roma’s biggest success stories on the transfer market this summer were keeping top stars, writes Sam Wilson.

The summer transfer window is nearing its end for another year and it certainly lived up to its hype as far as Italy is concerned. Several high-profile players moved to the country, with Matthijs de Ligt snubbing the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Manchester United to join Juventus whilst Inter Milan broke their transfer record to purchase United’s Romelu Lukaku. Meanwhile, there were some eventful changes off the pitch; Fiorentina have seen a new owner take charge in the form of Rocco Commisso, whilst Inter, Juventus, Milan and Roma all changed their head coaches.
