Lazio show tremendous spirit under difficult circumstances

Lazio’s hard-fought victory against Torino on Sunday was emblematic of their ‘never die’ attitude, writes Lee Bushe.

“I couldn’t miss out on that hug with my lads, especially after the week we’ve had.”

Indeed, no one could blame Simone Inzaghi for rushing off his bench to celebrate Lazio’s last-minute winner against Torino with his players. It had probably been, with the coronavirus outbreak within his squad, the toughest week of his managerial career so far, and he had every reason to be proud of his players for weathering that storm.

The result came after they travelled to Club Brugge for a 1-1 Europa League draw without 12 first team players, some of whom ended up testing ‘false positive’ for COVID-19, and with others not ready to start this afternoon in Turin either.

Lazio try to find a way out of the labyrinth

Lazio performed valiantly under difficult circumstances in their draw against Club Brugge on Tuesday, but Lee Bushe questions whether they should be expected to do it again when they face Torino on Sunday.

Just as they appeared to be turning a corner, Lazio were thrusted into chaos.

Simone Inzaghi’s side had endured a difficult start to the season, winning just one of their four opening fixtures. Then - and against all expectations - they cruised to a 3-1 victory against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, following that up with a solid 2-1 win over Bologna upon their return to domestic action.

It is remarkable that the Biancocelesti were able to pick up a point in Bruges, as they left 12 players behind due to injuries and last-minute COVID-19 tests.
