Some Serie A identities are innate

Just as a leopard can't change its spots, some Serie A clubs simply cannot shake their natural identities, for good or bad, writes Susy Campanale.

It’s remarkable that some clubs have an identity firmly entrenched in their very being, which cannot seem to change, no matter how many coaches, players and owners pass through. Inter are the Pazza (crazy) side that will lurch from a magnificent victory to a ludicrous self-inflicted defeat. Roma will always find a way of creating drama and chaos. Lazio forever think like the country cousins in the shadow of their city-dwelling rivals. Juventus grind out results, because winning is the only thing that matters. Atalanta run like the wind, or the Goddess in their club symbol.

A step too far for Lazio

Even comeback kings Lazio couldn’t turn this one around, as Giancarlo Rinaldi saw their lack of strength in depth finally catch up with them against Milan.

There are only so many times you can go to the well. No team more than Lazio has shown the spirit and character needed to turn around a game this season, but in the end, that effort takes its toll. The emotional strain - and the absence of their star striker - was probably enough to kill off an already ailing title dream.

Inzaghi: 'Lazio had problems'

Simone Inzaghi outlines the sheer extent of the problems he had putting together a Lazio XI in the 3-0 defeat to Milan. ‘We weren’t fortunate either.’

The Aquile were always going to struggle without Capocannoniere Ciro Immobile and his natural replacement Felipe Caicedo, both suspended, and they failed to trouble Gianluigi Donnarumma in a 3-0 home defeat.

It leaves them seven points adrift of Serie A leaders Juventus and the Scudetto dreams are drifting out of reach.

Farris: 'Lazio showed mentality'

Lazio assistant manager Massimiliano Farris, standing in for suspended Simone Inzaghi, praised their ‘mentality and spirit of sacrifice’ after another comeback win at Torino.

Once again, the Aquile went behind only to turn it all around through Ciro Immobile and Marco Parolo.

“The team showed real spirit of sacrifice, especially the forwards,” Farris told Sky Sport Italia after the 2-1 victory.

Out of Lazio's control

It had all been going Lazio’s way until the shutdown changed the Calcio landscape and sapped their momentum, writes Owen Diana.

When COVID-19 still seemed a distant disease on the other side of the world, this was a Lazio squad capable of winning the Scudetto. The team has remained the same, but all the circumstances that had conspired to make them title contenders have been utterly transformed.

Inzaghi: 'Lazio closing in on main target'

Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi has claimed the Biancocelesti are ‘close’ to reaching ‘our main target’ ahead of the match against Torino tomorrow.

The Aquile bounced back with a 2-1 win against Fiorentina on Saturday but sit four points behind league leaders Juventus due to the 3-2 defeat to Atalanta in their first match back after the interruption.

But Inzaghi looks at the bigger picture and insists his side are closing in on the target they had set before the season started.

Vlahovic given two-match ban

Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic has received a two-match ban for his elbow on Patric, while Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi is suspended for the Torino trip.

The Disciplinary Commission gave its verdicts after the Saturday games, as we already prepare for Week 29 fixtures.

Vlahovic was sent off during injury time in Fiorentina’s 2-1 defeat to Lazio, as he was caught on camera elbowing Patric in an off-the-ball incident.

He has been given a two-match ban, so will miss both the games against Sassuolo and Parma.

Inzaghi: 'Lazio character and hunger'

Simone Inzaghi feels Lazio fought back to beat Fiorentina with ‘character and hunger’ to keep their Scudetto dreams alive in difficult circumstances.

It was a bad start to the game for the hosts just days after their 3-2 defeat to Atalanta, as Franck Ribery waltzed through defenders to put the Viola in front.

However, a soft penalty converted by Ciro Immobile and the late Luis Alberto strike turned it around, keeping Lazio within four points of leaders Juventus.

Atalanta and Lazio didn't let us down

The great entertainers of Serie A went head-to-head and more than lived up to the billing, as Giancarlo Rinaldi relished Atalanta’s 3-2 win over Lazio.

There’s always a danger in anticipating a game too much. It was more than possible - after all - that the lengthy break might have dulled Atalanta and Lazio’s ability to entertain. In the end, though, we need not have worried.
