Napoli: Genk appoint new coach

Hannes Wolf has been appointed the new coach of Napoli's Champions League opponents Racing Genk.

The former Stuttgart and Hamburg boss, still just 38, will lead out the Belgian champions at the San Paolo on December 10.

He replaces Felice Mazzu, who was sacked earlier this month following a heavy 6-2 defeat to RB Salzburg.

Genk are currently bottom of their Champions League group, with only one point from four games.

Napoli rivals Genk sack coach

Napoli’s Champions League opponents KRC Genk have fired coach Felice Mazzu, just months after the club won the Belgian title.

They sold many top stars over the summer and have been struggling both in Europe and domestically.

The club announced this morning that coach Mazzu, assistants Tom Van Imschoot, Denis Dessaer and Sandro Salamone had all been axed after taking over in the summer.

Awaiting a new permanent replacement, Domenico Olivieri and Kevin Van Dessel will lead the training sessions.

If only Napoli had Icardi

Napoli’s struggle to break down defensive teams just intensifies the regret at missing out on Mauro Icardi, writes Emmet Gates.

Whilst not in full-blown crisis mode, there are murmurs of discontent surrounding Napoli at present. Failing to find the back of the net in three of their last four games has not gone unnoticed. To make matters worse, all of those fixtures were eminently winnable. Cagliari, Genk and Torino are all teams Carlo Ancelotti’s men should be brushing aside if they are to have serious aspirations of winning something this season.

Genk: 'Napoli asked for Berge'

KRC Genk President Peter Croonen confirms “Napoli asked for information on Sander Berge. I think €20-25m is a fair valuation.”

The 21-year-old played in the 0-0 Champions League draw with Napoli on October 2 and is under contract with the Belgian side until June 2021.

“Napoli have very good directors who really appreciate our players and asked for information on our Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge,” Croonen told Radio Kiss Kiss.

Mazzu: 'Genk set the template'

Genk Coach Felice Mazzù believes their performance against Napoli “must set the template for what we need to do in future,” but thinks Fabian Ruiz should've seen red.

The game ended 0-0, despite the visitors hitting the woodwork three times and only a goal-line clearance denying Kalidou Koulibaly.

However, it was still a vast improvement over their opening 6-2 defeat at RB Salzburg.

Mertens: 'Napoli didn't play our football'

Dries Mertens feels Napoli failed to get the victory against KRC Genk and didn’t “play our football. It’s a pity.”

The Belgian had provided 72 tickets to friends and family for the game, including his parents, as Genk is only 70km from his hometown.

However, he only came off the bench in the second half and failed to find the net in a 0-0 draw.

Ancelotti: 'Still a positive result'

Carlo Ancelotti assured Napoli’s 0-0 draw with Genk was “not a slip-up at all and remains a positive result,” while explaining why Lorenzo Insigne was in the stands.

The Partenopei hit the woodwork three times and saw Kalidou Koulibaly’s effort cleared off the line at the Luminus Arena.

“It was a good performance and we had several chances for the breakthrough,” Ancelotti said on Sky Sport Italia and in a Press conference.
