Gozzano won't accept FIGC decision

Gozzano are among the clubs relegated from Lega Pro to Serie D and hit out at the FIGC’s decision: “One of the ugliest pages of Italian football has been written.”

The club released a statement after having learned about the relegation and were struggling to accept the decision made by the Federcalcio.

“The Club deeply regrets the decision taken by the FIGC today, who, justifying behind the wide powers received to deal with the COVID-19 crisis, has decided to kill a virtuous club like AC Gozzano,” the statement read.

Rimini President resigns in protest

Rimini President Giorgio Grassi has resigned in protest of the decision to relegate his club to Serie D via algorithm.

Rimini, along with Gozzano and Rieta, were demoted from Serie C today, owing to their placings at the bottom of each three groups.

However, the Biancorossi were relegated despite having the same number of points and an equal goal difference to Fano directly above them.

Official: Serie C stops here

The regular Serie C season has ended with Vicenza, Reggina and Silvio Berlusconi’s Monza promoted and Gozzano, Rimini and Rieti relegated.

The decision was made official at today’s Federal Council, where it was also confirmed Serie A would be decided by playoffs and playoffs or an algorithm if the season stopped again.

Consequently, Monza, Vicenza and Reggina – leaders of the three Serie C groups – will go into the second tier.

Official: Di Piazza exits Palermo

Tony Di Piazza has officially vacated his role as Vice-President of Palermo, owning to disagreements with the club’s board.

Di Piazza formed part of the consortium that brought Palermo back from the ashes last summer, allowing the new team to wipe the slate clean in Serie D.

They won promotion to Serie C following the decision to end non-league championships early, with the Rosanero seven points clear at top of their division.

Palermo promoted to Serie C?

Palermo look set to win promotion to Serie C after the Italian non-league voted to freeze the current campaign.

The announcement was made during yesterday’s Federal Council that Serie D would not resume for the 2019-20 season.

Now, the non-league’s governing body – Lega Nazionale Dilettanti – has agreed to end the season with tables as they are.

Providing the proposals are approved at the next Federal Council, Palermo will start next term in Serie C.

FIGC: New season on Sept 1

The FIGC has decided that Serie A, Serie B and Serie C can all resume, Serie D cannot and that the 2020-21 season can start on September 1.

The Federal Council was held today and Sky Sport Italia reports the FIGC made several key calls during the meeting.

The first concerns professional football, with Serie A, Serie B and Serie C given until August 20 to complete its respective campaigns.

The 19-20 season will be allowed to stretch to August 31 to ensure the conclusion of the Coppa Italia, which is at the semi-final second-leg stage.

Rinaldi dies after suffering brain aneurysm

Atalanta and Legnano youngster Andrea Rinaldi died this morning, three days after suffering a brain aneurysm.

The 19-year-old, who fell unwell on Friday and was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Varese, died this morning.

The midfielder was on loan at Legnano in Serie D and the club describes him as ‘a golden boy, exemplary in life and play’.

Sibilia: 'Very close to resuming in June'

The FIGC Vice-President Cosimo Sibilia has claimed Serie A must resume to help the economy and said 'the hypothesis of restarting in June is close to becoming a reality’.

After the assemblies of Serie A and B, the FIGC Vice-President has sent his requests asking the government for answers regarding the amateur Leagues.

In the meantime, he confirmed that Serie A is close to getting the go ahead for a resumption of the championship in June.

Coronavirus reaches Serie B too

The Coronavirus panic has now reached Serie B, as today’s game between Ascoli and Cremonese has officially been called off, with more potentially to follow.

Until now, there have been 42 matches postponed in the Lombardy and Veneto region from the amateur leagues, youth levels and some in semi-professional Serie D.

This morning, Serie C fixture Piacenza-Sambenedettese was also suspended due to the spread of the virus.

More games cancelled by Coronavirus scare

The alarm over growing Coronavirus cases in Italy has seen 42 games called off this weekend, including Serie C match Piacenza-Sambenedettese and Serie D fixtures.

A press conference this morning stated there are at least 25 cases of contagion in the Lombardy and Veneto regions, with two victims having already died.
