Monchi: 'Roma kicked me out'

Sevilla director of sport Monchi blames injuries for his failed spell at the Olimpico, but concedes Roma “kicked me out.”

He had spent most of his career at Sevilla before trying the experience in Italy from April 2017 to March 2019.

The Spaniard resigned after the club sacked Coach Eusebio Di Francesco, although he now admits that’s not quite what happened.

Better call Claudio

Claudio Ranieri is again called on to rescue a troubled team, replacing Eusebio Di Francesco for the second time in seven months, writes Kaustubh Pandey.

Every time Claudio Ranieri joins a new club, the most optimistic of fans cast glances at Leicester City’s miraculous Premier League win in 2016. Others could also look at how he sparked a revival at Roma last season once he replaced Eusebio di Francesco, who was left in an absolute mess after some poor recruitment by Monchi in the summer of 2018.

Now, he finds himself in a similar position and replacing the exact same Coach, but in a different venue and much earlier in the campaign.

'Monchi offered Zaniolo to Genoa'

Genoa’s former general manager claims Monchi offered Roma sensation Nicolo Zaniolo to his club in January.

Zaniolo was one of Serie A’s breakout stars during the second half of last season with Roma, but Giorgio Perinetti revealed Monchi tried to take him elsewhere.

“On deadline day of the last transfer window, [Federico] Balzaretti called me saying that Monchi wanted to talk to me,” Perinetti, who left Genoa earlier in the summer, told Il Secolo XIX.

Nainggolan: 'I could've stayed at Roma'

Radja Nainggolan admits leaving Roma was “a decision made by someone who is no longer there, so I could even have stayed,” referring clearly to Monchi.

The midfielder never disguised the belief he was pushed out of the club by director of sport Monchi, who quit the day after Coach Eusebio Di Francesco was fired in March.

Nainggolan had already joined Inter, which lasted just one season before he was loaned to Cagliari.

“I split with Roma and that was a very heavy blow to get over,” the Belgian told Sky Sport Italia.

Agent tirade against 'lying' Roma

A war of words has erupted between Turkish agent Bayram Tutumlu and Roma President James Pallotta, who dubbed the furious representative “hilarious.”

Tutumlu helped broker the moves for Robin Olsen and Cengiz Under, and is close to ex-Giallorossi director of sport Monchi.

The agent went on a Twitter tirade aimed at Roma, President Pallotta, consultant Franco Baldini and new director of sport Gianluca Petrachi – all of it in Spanish.

Monchi wants Nzonzi reunion

Sevilla sporting director Monchi reportedly wants to bring Roma midfielder Steven Nzonzi back to Andalusia.

According to the Spanish football website El Gol Digital, the sporting director wants to reunite with the player that he signed last summer, while he was still employed by the Giallorossi.

The Frenchman failed to report back for a pre-season medical with the capital club and is pushing for a move away from Italy, with Olympique Lyonnais also reportedly interested as they are looking for a replacement for Tottenham-bound Tanguy Ndombele.

Roma start again. And again.

Following an underwhelming campaign and numerous changes on and off the field, Roma will be looking to start from scratch next season, writes Steven Moore.

This is not how President James Pallotta would have expected his season to go, especially after the splendid 2017-18 campaign that saw Roma finish in third place with 77 points and progress to the Champions League semi-finals.

A combination of erroneous decisions in the summer transfer window initiated their decline and Pallotta put the blame squarely on his director of sport Monchi, who quit for a return to Sevilla in March.

Monchi: 'Best if Roma move on'

Former Roma director of sport Monchi believes “it’s better for everyone that we move forward” and ignore President James Pallotta’s criticism.

In an open letter on the official club website, Pallotta confirmed some parts of the expose in La Repubblica about Daniele De Rossi’s turbulent exit were true, specifically blaming Monchi for “lying” to the captain and getting their transfer strategy wrong.
