Monchi: 'Don't know when Sevilla-Roma games will be played'

Sevilla sporting director Monchi says “he doesn’t know” when the Spanish side’s Europa League games against Roma will be played.

The two sides were due to clash on Thursday in the Europa League Round of 16, however the Seville authorities refused to grant Roma entry into the city in light of the Coronavirus.

Monchi spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about when he believes the games will go ahead.

“I’m not sure a solution can be found quickly,” the director of sport told La Gazzetta.

Monchi's past & present

Roma face Sevilla in the Europa League last 16 this week but, as Livio Caferoglu recounts, it also marks a year since Monchi left to rejoin the Giallorossi’s upcoming opponents...

‘What could have been’ is a phrase that seems to resonate with Roma more than most clubs. On March 6 last year, the plug was pulled on the Monchi project at the Olimpico as the Lupi crashed out of the Champions League last 16, going out to an extra-time penalty against Porto. Just two days later, the sporting director parted company with Roma and ultimately sought home comforts, returning to Sevilla the following month.

Suso close to Sevilla?

Milan and Sevilla are allegedly close to agreeing on a deal that will see Suso return to Spain this winter.

Calciomercato.com reports that Sevilla are negotiating with Zvonimir Boban and Paolo Maldini, who could be willing to let the playing leave on loan with an option to buy.

The winger is reportedly not a part of the Rossoneri's plans and has also been linked with a move to Roma during the last month.

Better call Claudio

Claudio Ranieri is again called on to rescue a troubled team, replacing Eusebio Di Francesco for the second time in seven months, writes Kaustubh Pandey.

Every time Claudio Ranieri joins a new club, the most optimistic of fans cast glances at Leicester City’s miraculous Premier League win in 2016. Others could also look at how he sparked a revival at Roma last season once he replaced Eusebio di Francesco, who was left in an absolute mess after some poor recruitment by Monchi in the summer of 2018.

Now, he finds himself in a similar position and replacing the exact same Coach, but in a different venue and much earlier in the campaign.
