Sneijder retires from football

Former Inter and Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder has announced his retirement from professional football.

Sneijder will instead spend the season watching hometown club Utrecht from the comfort of his own skybox at their stadium.

“My love for the city of Utrecht is great,” he told the Eredivisie side’s official website.

“We often talked about the possibility of me coming here, and now we’ve put this thing on paper. I’m looking forward to a great season!”

Ronaldo & De Ligt up for FIFA award

Juventus pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Matthijs de Ligt have been nominated for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2019.

Ronaldo helped Juve win their eighth straight Scudetto following his Italian-record €112m transfer from Real Madrid last summer, scoring 28 goals in all competitions.

He also captained Portugal to glory at the inaugural edition of the Nations League.

Roma target Club Brugge winger

Roma are showing interest in Club Brugge’s Dutch international winger Arnaut Danjuma, claim Sky Sport Italia.

They need a replacement for Stephan El Shaarawy, who was sold to Shanghai Shenhua, on the left side of their attack.

Danjuma is 22 years old and already has two senior caps for the Netherlands, in which he scored one goal.

His versatility is also key, as he can play on the right or as a support striker.

Another loan for Fiorentina winger

FC Twente have announced that Fiorentina winger Rafik Zekhnini will spend another season on loan at the club.

Zekhnini joined Fiorentina from Norwegian side Odd in the summer of 2017 but has played just once for them in Serie A.

The 21-year-old was sent to Twente last season and helped them back into the Eredivisie with five goals and four assists.

Italy defeating China was an impressive outcome, but Andrea Tallarita believes that in this Women's World Cup the real test of might is only just beginning.

It really would have taken a small miracle for China to beat Italy. The ladies from the Far East had a well-organised squad, but their greatest weakness coincided with the Azzurre's outstanding strength: having scored only once in their three games to that point, the Chinese were as bad at banging goals in as our girls are at keeping them out.

Since Italy has also shown some considerable attacking prowess, it seemed natural – all tactical permutations aside – to expect the girls in blue to outscore their opponents, and this is exactly what happened.

WWC: Dutch quarter-final for Italy

Italy will face the Netherlands in the Women’s World Cup quarter-final on Saturday afternoon after a dramatic win over Japan.

It kicks off on Saturday at 14.00 UK time (13.00 GMT), while the other quarter-finals are Norway-England, France-USA and Germany-Sweden.

The Dutch side thanked a brace from Lieke Martens, but above all her ice cool stoppage-time penalty to decide the 2-1 victory.

De Ligt: 'Ronaldo asked me to join Juve'

Matthijs de Ligt reveals Cristiano Ronaldo “asked me to come to Juventus” after the Nations League Final. "I was a little shocked."

Portugal beat the Netherlands 1-0 to win the first ever edition of the tournament, with a goal from Goncalo Guedes.

At the final whistle, Ronaldo and De Ligt were seen laughing, so the Ajax defender was asked what they’d been talking about.

Nations League: Portugal take the trophy

Portugal have won the first ever Nations League trophy after beating the Netherlands in the Final with a Goncalo Guedes strike.

England took the bronze medal in this inaugural edition of the Nations League, needing sudden death penalties to get the better of Switzerland.

Jasper Cillessen needed saves on Bruno Fernandes and a Cristiano Ronaldo glancing header, as Portugal dominated the first half with 12 shots on goal compared to none for the Dutch side.

Italy U17 lose Euro Final

Italy were forced to settle for a runners-up finish at the European Under-17 Championship after they lost 4-2 to Netherlands in Sunday’s Final.

The Azzurrini beat Spain, Germany and Austria in the group stage, before taking care of the Portuguese and a fancied French side in the knockout stages.

However, they found themselves three goals down in the first half of the Final, although a brace from Milan striker Lorenzo Colombo made the scoreline a bit more respectable in the second.
