PSV sack Van Bommel

Former Milan star Mark van Bommel has been sacked as head coach of Dutch club PSV.

PSV announced this morning that Van Bommel had been relieved of his duties.

It comes after a 3-1 defeat to Feyenoord, which left the Eindhoven side 10 points behind Eredivisie leaders Ajax in fourth place.

The 42-year-old played 50 games for Milan after moving from Bayern Munich in January 2011 and helped the Rossoneri to their last Scudetto.

He returned to manage PSV in the summer of 2018 and guided them to a runners-up finish in the Eredivisie last season.

De Ligt wins Kopa award

Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has won the Kopa Trophy for best under-21 player of last season.

De Ligt reached the Champions League semi-finals with Ajax last season, eliminating Juve along the way, and won a domestic double.

Those exploits earned him a move to Turin over the summer for a reported €75m.

The Kopa Trophy was introduced last year, with Kylian Mbappe winning the inaugural award, beating the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma and Patrick Cutrone.

Van Basten banned for Nazi remark

Milan legend Marco van Basten has got himself into trouble in his homeland for making a Nazi remark live on air.

Van Basten was working as a pundit for Fox Sports during its coverage of the match between Heracles and his former side Ajax on Saturday.

The Dutchman said ‘sieg heil’, which is a German phrase for ‘hail victory’ and is associated with Adolf Hitler and Nazi rallies.

Worse yet, he said the phrase on a day when Dutch football was promoting a campaign against racial discrimination.

De Vrij minor injury concern

Inter defender Stefan de Vrij has pulled out of Holland’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Northern Ireland with a minor injury.

The centre-back had been due to start this evening in Belfast.

Instead, he is not even on the bench for this game, as he is not fully fit.

According to Fox Sports and Mediaset Premium, it is not a serious injury and De Vrij agreed with coach Ronald Koeman to sit this one out.

He felt a twinge during yesterday’s training session and preferred not to risk further damage, awaiting more tests.

“We’re playing again after three days, so it’s a chance for some players to rest and others to make their mark,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

Casarin: 'Handball rule unreasonable'

Former referee Paolo Casarin blasted the new handball rules and increased use of VAR. “Reason is dying in football and the referee is being delegitimised, but we must stop play for racist abuse.”

The changes to the handball interpretation has to all intents and purposes ruled out the difference between a voluntary block and involuntary ricochet.

“I saw the penalty they gave against Matthijs de Ligt,” Casarin wrote in the Corriere dello Sport, referring to the Euro 2020 qualifier between the Netherlands and Germany.
