‘Calhanoglu a top signing’

Former Milan Coach Fatih Terim believes Hakan Calahanoglu is “a top signing” for his old club.

The Rossoneri officially confirmed the signing of the midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen yesterday, in a deal thought to be worth €20m plus bonuses.

Terim was briefly Coach of the Diavolo in 2001 and is currently in charge of the Turkish national team, and he believes his former club have pulled off a coup.

“He’s already a very mature player, despite his young age,” Terim said of the 23-year-old.

Italy are out of the European Under-17 Championship after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Turkey.

The Azzurrini had beaten hosts Croatia 1-0 in the opening group game thanks to a goal by Juventus striker Moise Kean.

A 3-1 loss to Spain put them in a tenuous position and on Tuesday evening they failed to get the necessary result against Turkey.

Malik Karaahmet had opened the scoring for Turkey within five minutes, meeting a cross from captain Yunus Akgun.

Turkey give themselves hope

Turkey hadn’t scored in their first two games, but are now in a position to qualify as one of the better third-placed teams after crushing the Czech Republic.

The Czechs needed a victory to progress as one of the best third-placed teams, whereas Turkey had to win by two clear goals to have any hope after a dismal start to the tournament.

Turkey took the lead after just 10 minutes, Emre Mor allowed to sprint down the right unmarked and pull back for Burak Yilmaz to blast into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

Luka Modric gave dominant Croatia a 1-0 victory over Turkey with a stunning volley, but they also hit the bar twice in Paris.

Croatia therefore currently lead Group D, as Spain and the Czech Republic play tomorrow.

These sides famously clashed in the Euro 2008 quarter-final, which saw Turkey go through on penalties after a 1-1 draw, and Croatia took revenge by winning the Euro 2012 play-off 3-0 on aggregate. There were five Serie A players in the Croatian XI, while new Inter full-back Caner Erkin featured for Fatih Terim’s men.

Lazio want Turkey boss Terim

Lazio could look to Turkey boss Fatih Terim as their Coach for next season, according to Il Tempo newspaper.

The Rome-based publication suggests Terim could be prepared to have a third stab at Serie A football after spells at Fiorentina and Milan.

The 62-year-old tactician was at Fiorentina from July 2000 to February 2001, fired after a row with then-patron Vittorio Cecchi-Gori.

He then had an even shorter experience at Milan from July to November 2001, eventually sacked to make way for Carlo Ancelotti.
