De Laurentiis: ‘Calcio the winner’

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis believes Italian football was the real winner in last night’s Supercoppa win over Juventus.

The Partenopei emerged victorious in a penalty shootout after the sides had played out a 2-2 draw after extra-time, and the club’s President believes the spectacle was a great advert for Italian football.

“Tonight Italian football won,” De Laurentiis told Rai Sport after the game.

Barzagli returns to Juve fold

Andrea Barzagli will travel to Doha for the Supercoppa Italiana as Max Allegri announces his Juventus squad.

The Coach has named 27 players who will make the trips to Cagliari and Qatar, with the Bianconeri taking on the Isolani in Serie A before facing Napoli in the Supercoppa.

Kwadwo Asamoah and Romulo will both sit out the trips, as they recover from surgery, but the inclusion of Barzagli may indicate the defender is at last on the comeback trail.

Supercoppa in the Middle East?

Next season’s Supercoppa looks set to be played on foreign soil, with Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Dubai all possible destinations.

The game between the League winners and the Coppa winners is usually the curtain-raiser to the new domestic season, and will this time be fought out between Juventus and Napoli.

Serie A & Supercoppa dates set

It has been announced that the Italian Supercoppa fixture between Juventus and Napoli will take place on December 23.

While a venue for the encounter is yet to be confirmed, the usual season curtain raiser has been moved upon request of the Partenopei in order to allow them to concentrate fully on their Champions League qualifying matches.
