Iaquinta cleared of Mafia association

World Cup winner Vincenzo Iaquinta has been cleared of aiding and abetting organised crime, but his father was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

Iaquinta is from the Calabria region, the heartland of the ‘Ndrangheta, and it was always known his family had associations with the local Mafia.

He had been found guilty of keeping his own legally-purchased weapons at his father’s house, which contravenes the norms on gun ownership, and sentenced to two years in October 2018.

A salute to Daniele De Rossi

Daniele De Rossi plays his last game for Roma this weekend and Andrea Tallarita reflects on the story of one of the greatest modern midfielders.

The film of Daniele De Rossi's career as a footballer is over. You can hang around and hope for a post-credits scene in the MLS, in China, or wherever, but we all know that once his Roma shirt comes off after the game against Parma, it will be time for us to stand and leave the cinema.

Lippi: ‘My one mistake…’

World Cup winner Marcello Lippi admits he was “terribly wrong” to step down as Italy CT after lifting that trophy.

The legendary Coach led the Azzurri to glory in Germany in 2006, but he resigned immediately after before returning for a disastrous second spell which ended in a group stage exit at the 2010 World Cup.

“I won everything I dreamed of winning and more,” Lippi told Corriere dello Sport.

“I got it terribly wrong once. I shouldn't have left the national team, and I should never have come back.

Italy reign over Ukraine

As the Azzurri prepare to face Ukraine tonight, Daryl Hammond looks back on the history of the fixture.

"The Italians have a great team and they don't forgive mistakes," said former Ukraine manager Oleg Blokhin. And a ruthless Italy side capitalised on a fair few of them when the sides met on the biggest stage.

In the grand scheme of things, Italy's quarter-final meeting with Ukraine at the 2006 World Cup was a mere speed bump on their way to lifting the famous trophy in Germany.

Luca Toni scored twice as they ran out 3-0 winners, in what was their biggest win of the tournament.

Totti: 'I wanted to punch Nedved'

Francesco Totti slammed Juventus star Pavel Nedved in his autobiography as “a shocking whiner, he made you want to punch him.”

The Roma legend’s book, Un Capitano, is released today to mark his 42nd birthday and he doesn’t hold back on criticism of the likes of Luciano Spalletti.

He looked back on Italy’s 2006 World Cup victory against the Czech Republic, where he had to face off with Nedved.

Italy break with 2006 winners

There are several options for Italy’s line-up against Poland in the Nations League tonight, but it will be the first without World Cup winners.

It kicks off at the Stadio Dall’Ara in Bologna at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

The first competitive match under new CT Roberto Mancini will have the 4-3-3 system, but there is precious little else known about who he will pick.

Materazzi: 'Croatia like Italy 2006'

Marco Materazzi praised Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic, as he believes Croatia “have something of Italy in 2006” ahead of the World Cup Final against France.

The most famous moment in Matrix’s career saw him being headbutted in the chest by Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup Final.

Until today, that was also the last time Les Bleus had been in a World Cup Final.

On this day: Germany 0-2 Italy

On this day in 2006, Italy beat Germany 2-0 in the World Cup semi-final, in one of the best matches in modern times.

The Azzurri had beaten Australia and Ukraine in the knockout stages, but faced a daunting task in Dortmund against the hosts.

Marcello Lippi’s men had the first chance of the game, but Jens Lehmann smothered the ball at Simone Perrotta’s feet after a clever pass from Francesco Totti.

Bernd Schneider should have put Die Mannschaft ahead, but he fired over Gianluigi Buffon’s crossbar.

On this day: Czech Rep 0-2 Italy

On this day in 2006, Italy beat the Czech Republic 2-0 to advance to the Last 16 of the World Cup.

The Azzurri had beaten Ghana in their first group game, but were held to a 1-1 draw in the second, with Daniele De Rossi sent off for a brutal elbow.

The Czechs, inspired by Juventus’ Pavel Nedved, had been ranked second in the world going into the tournament, and thrashed the USA 3-0 in their first game.

However, an injury to Jan Koller robbed them of a focal point in attack and they were stunned 2-0 by Ghana in Cologne on match day two.
