On this day: Czech Rep 0-2 Italy

On this day in 2006, Italy beat the Czech Republic 2-0 to advance to the Last 16 of the World Cup.

The Azzurri had beaten Ghana in their first group game, but were held to a 1-1 draw in the second, with Daniele De Rossi sent off for a brutal elbow.

The Czechs, inspired by Juventus’ Pavel Nedved, had been ranked second in the world going into the tournament, and thrashed the USA 3-0 in their first game.

However, an injury to Jan Koller robbed them of a focal point in attack and they were stunned 2-0 by Ghana in Cologne on match day two.

A nice area, a bit more room for the family and getting my satellite system in place so I could watch Italy win their play-off game with Sweden and have friends round for the World Cup. How fate - and my dish-fitter - would ultimately laugh at those plans.

On this day: Italy 2-0 Ghana

On this day in 2006, Italy got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Ghana in Hanover.

The Azzurri went into the tournament under the cloud of the Calciopoli scandal, with the futures of several of the Juventus and Milan dominated squad very much up in the air.

CT Marcello Lippi imbued a siege mentality, basing the team in Duisburg, a city almost flattened by bombing in the Second World War, and one with a large Italian population.
