On this day: Milan maul Inter

On this day in 2001, Milan thrashed Inter 6-0 for the biggest win in Derby della Madonnina history.

The Rossoneri were struggling in Serie A at the time and President Silvio Berlusconi seemed more interested in becoming the Prime Minister of Italy.

Cesare Maldini took over as Milan’s coach on a caretaker basis, replacing Alberto Zaccheroni, but couldn’t take them beyond sixth place in Serie A – four points behind fifth-placed Inter.

Stefano Sensi has claimed Christian Eriksen’s arrival “can lift” Inter ahead of the derby against Milan on Sunday.

Inter are currently three points behind Juventus in the title race and Sensi has claimed the Denmark international Eriksen could give the team a boost.

“We will do our best to keep up with Juventus,” Sensi told Sky Sport Italia. “Lazio are also doing well. We work to evict our mistakes and to score points.”

Vieri: Milan could've lost 6-0!

Christian Vieri slammed Milan’s “no contest” in the derby as “if it hadn’t been for Gianluigi Donnarumma, Inter would’ve won by five or six.”

Milan were adjudged to have underperformed badly during their 2-0 defeat in the Derby della Madonnina, and Vieri agreed Inter were superior by some distance.

“There was no contest,” the ex-Italy striker, who previously played for both clubs, told Tiki Taka.

'Milan need 4-5 players to compete'

Milan need to sign “4-5 players of absolute quality” if they are serious about competing for the Scudetto, claims Antonio Cassano.

Milan were without reply in the Derby della Madonnina on Saturday, losing 2-0 to city rivals Inter, and Cassano admits the outlook is bleak for his former club unless more quality comes in.

“The great chance in the match for Milan involved Suso, who had to tee up Leao,” the ex-Italy forward told Tiki Taka.

First blood in the Milan Derby

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall looks at the Derby Della Madonnina and assesses why this time it’s much bigger than just an intercity rivalry.

When the smoke settles in San Siro on Saturday night, there will be many answered questions. Both Milan sides have new Coaches, they are involved in projects that are at very different stages, but both need this Derby Della Madonnina victory. There has been criticism thrown at both teams and deservedly so, but this game of games will offer up a chance for one of the ‘misters’ to gain first blood and give their team a well needed boost.

Conte: Complete Inter change

Inter boss Antonio Conte warns change must go beyond the pitch as “other clubs are able to offer better protection in certain situations.”

A story came out during the week that Romelu Lukaku and Stefan de Vrij argued after Inter’s 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague, and Conte was unhappy with the manner in which it was allowed to circulate.

“We always try to put in maximum effort and follow our principles of preparation,” he said at a Press conference.

Milan launch anti-racism taskforce

Milan have announced that they will debut an anti-racism taskforce during tomorrow’s derby with Inter.

Serie A has once more been marred by racist incidents in recent weeks, with Romelu Lukaku and Franck Kessie abused by Cagliari and Verona fans.

Given the exposure of tomorrow’s derby, Milan will use the occasion to promote a campaign that aims to stamp out discrimination in stadia and on social media.
