Castan bids emotional Roma exit

An emotional Leandro Castan has bid farewell to Roma after six years at the club but hopes his brain injury has inspired the club to ‘never give up’.

Castan enjoyed first-choice status in Roma’s defence between 2012 and 2014, helping the club finish runners-up to Juventus in his second season, which saw them open the campaign with a Serie A record of 10 straight wins.

Castan: 'Scar symbol of rebirth'

Roma defender Leandro Castan wrote a moving tribute to the scar he still bears from brain surgery. “It’s a sign of my rebirth.”

The Brazilian had a knock to the head during a game in August 2014 and felt dizzy for days afterwards.

He went for tests that discovered a cavernoma – an irregular cluster of blood vessels in the brain – that was removed with delicate surgery and did not resume his playing career until December 2015.

“I feel ready, I’m available to the Coach, if he wants to rely on me,” Castan said at his presentation Press conference.

“I’m lacking match fitness, but I can play for 90 minutes. I miss the pitch so much, I have chills.

Official: Castan joins Cagliari

Cagliari have officially signed Leandro Castan on loan from Roma, while sending Marco Capuano to Crotone.

The double deal was completed this afternoon, as centre-back Castan’s arrival effectively made Capuano surplus to requirements.

Castan has never quite recaptured his form after a year out following delicate brain surgery to correct a cavernoma – cluster of irregular blood vessels.

The Brazilian defender is on loan until the end of the season, despite having been heavily linked with Genoa over the last few days.

Genoa clinch Castan deal

Genoa have reportedly agreed terms to sign defender Leandro Castan on loan from Roma.

The Brazilian joined the Giallorossi from Corinthians in 2012, but his career was railroaded by a cavernoma – a cluster of irregular blood vessels in the brain that required delicate surgery in September 2014.

He had loan spells at Sampdoria and Torino over the last 18 months, but has not received a single minute of football this season.

According to Sportitalia, the centre-back will join Genoa during this transfer window on loan.

Report: Castan extends with Roma

Leandro Castan has reportedly extended his Roma contract, but it’s just a way of spreading his wages over a longer period.

The centre-back was a crucial part of the Giallorossi side in 2012-13 and 2013-14, but at the start of the following season he had to undergo brain surgery to remove a cavernoma.

He’s been unable to break into the side since, and spent the second half of last season on loan at Torino.

According to Il Tempo, the Brazilian has now signed a new contract with the Lupi, tying him to the club until 2020.
