Only in Serie A: Cataclysmic Catania

Although not strictly Serie A, Livio Caferoglu remembers when Catania were the catalyst for a series of events in the summer of 2003 that would change Italian football forever...

It was April 12, 2003 and Serie B was on the home stretch. Catania were 16th, in the thick of a relegation battle, and were hosting a Siena side just two points off the top. The match finished 1-1, which did neither team any favours, but there was a problem. Siena had fielded an ineligible player in defender Luigi Martinelli, who was still serving a ban. What should’ve been a simple overturning of the result morphed into mayhem.

Silvio Berlusconi’s Monza shocked Serie B side Benevento to set up a tie with Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia third round.

Monza won a seven-goal thriller, surviving a late penalty to beat Benevento 4-3, and face Fiorentina in the next round.

Feralpisalo, Pisa, Perugia, Salernitana, Venezia, Crotone, Spezia, Sudtirol, Cremonese and Imolese, meanwhile, all secured Serie A ties.

So did Chievo, although the Flying Donkeys needed a penalty shootout to avoid a giant-killing at the hands of third-tier Ravenna.

Novara set up Lazio meeting

Novara grabbed a last-gasp 3-2 win over Pisa in the Coppa Italia, to set up a Last 16 trip to the Stadio Olimpico to face Lazio.

The visitors took the lead early on through Michele Marconi, but Diego Peralta equalised just six minutes later.

Davide Bove put the Biancoazzurri ahead after 53 minutes, but they were pegged back by Francesco Lisi.

It appeared the match would be heading to extra-time, but Jacopo Manconi turned on-loan Bologna youngster Fabrizio Brignani in the 91st minute before firing it past Stefano Gori in the Pisa goal.
