Reports are growing in Italy that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is recommending Mark van Bommel to be the new Milan coach.

Stefano Pioli’s fate already seemed to be sealed even before last night’s 2-1 defeat to hand Inter the Scudetto, a record sixth consecutive Derby della Madonnina loss.

A long list of potential names have been mentioned, including Julen Lopetegui – who earned at best a tepid reaction from fans – Marcelo Gallardo, Manuel Pellegrini, Unai Emery, Christophe Galtier and Sergio Conceicao.

However, after Tuttosport first floated the idea last week, Calciomercato.it are now confident that Ibrahimovic is pushing for Van Bommel.

Ibra pushing for Van Bommel

The 47-year-old Dutchman played for Milan alongside Ibrahimovic from January 2011 to June 2012.

His solo coaching career began at PSV Eindhoven in 2018, moving on through Wolfsburg and since the summer of 2022 at Royal Antwerp.

His side won the Jupiler Pro League title and Belgian Cup last season, as well as the Belgian Supercup this term.

While Ibrahimovic is certainly going to play an important role in choosing the new Milan coach, he still has to convince patron Gerry Cardinale and CEO Giorgio Furlani.
