UEFA: 'Milan sanction acknowledged'

UEFA have released a statement on Milan’s exclusion from the Europa League, seeing it as “confirmation failure to be break-even compliant must lead to a severe sanction.”

The Rossoneri had appealed the original exclusion last year and the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) delayed its implementation while studying the situation and finding compromise punishments that did not suit either side.

Milan 'accept' Europa exclusion

Milan have ‘accepted’ their exclusion from the Europa League and believe it will act as ‘a stimulus to restoring the club to its rightful place.’

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on Friday that it had ratified Milan’s agreement with UEFA over essentially swapping Financial Fair Play breaches for a season out of European competition.

Milan UEFA ruling delayed again?

UEFA and the CAS have still not released their Milan FFP verdict and La Repubblica suggests it could take up to 15 days.

It was widely expected earlier this week that the decision would be announced, with Milan accepting a ‘consent award’ of a year out of the Europa League in exchange for more time to balance the books.

This ruling would also combine the two cases covering Financial Fair Play violations for the periods 2014-17 and 2015-18.

However, several days have gone by and there is still no sign of the announcement.

Milan clear for Europe?

Milan should be able to play in the Europa League next season as they have no hearing scheduled with the Court of Arbitration for Sport before August 14.

It was announced a week ago that UEFA suspended proceedings against Milan over Financial Fair Play until after their ongoing CAS appeal from last year had been resolved.

CAS’ website has since revealed that there are no hearings scheduled with the Rossoneri - or Manchester City - before August 14.

Milan present sole UEFA case

Milan and UEFA are waiting for the CAS verdict before ruling on FFP violations so that the two different cases can be combined into one.

The Rossoneri had originally been excluded from the Europa League last spring due to Financial Fair Play violations regarding the 2015, 2016 and 2017 years.

Their appeal to the CAS in Lausanne caused that to be suspended and they were able to play, albeit eliminated in the group stage, before the verdict in December 2018.

Milan negotiate new FFP deal?

Milan and UEFA are reportedly in negotiations to work out a simpler Financial Fair Play settlement rather than lodge a new CAS appeal.

The Rossoneri were found to be in breach of FFP regulations and ordered to break even by 2020-21 or risk being excluded from European tournaments.

Milan’s new owners Elliott Management argue they should not be punished for the mistakes of the previous administration, under Yonghong Li.

Milan want Li answers

Milan have reportedly requested assistance from China over Yonghong Li’s business affairs ahead of meeting UEFA on Friday.

According to ANSA, Milan have sent a letters rogatory, asking for the Chinese courts to help them piece together how Li funded his 2017 takeover.

Silvio Berlusconi agreed to sell the Rossoneri for €740m to the businessman, but it later emerged that he borrowed €303m from Elliott Management, which replaced him as the club’s owner after he defaulted on the loan.
